Since September, Cora Adams and Jane Langford, YWCA's youth department director and associate, have organized YW clubs at Horace Mann, Bryant. Jordan and Lincoln schools. "The clubs are not formal with presidents and vice presidents, because we find it works better without officers, and the natural leaders alcome up out of groups ways like these," says Cora, the mother of two young teens. Most of the clubs are activity oriented, but Jane and Cora find that sometimes planned outings are put off because another program or rap session be-side- s, gets started and is too interesting to stop. The clubs stay loose and informal... which is exactly the way kids are today... and al- ways have been. For an informal group, however, the teens have been very busy. There have been cooking sessions (chili, tacos, cake and cookies . . different groups not one meal!) skating parties, museum trips, detention center trips, football games, trampoline parties, dances, a hike to the downtown library, candle holder making and macrame work, just to name a few. In the future is an elementary school club with Sumner and Webster schools, and a discussion club at Roosevelt school. |
