They are the Office of the Chief, the Equipment Pool Branch, the Calibrations Branch, the Heavy Equipment Maintenance Branch, the Instrumentation Branch, die Motor Maintenance Branch and the Office Machine Repair Branch. Mr. Henry R. Whitaker is the Chief of Consolidated Equipment Division. He has lived here on Dugway for over 16 years. He was a member of Test Operations prior to becoming chief of the division in July of 1965. When asked why he stayed, he replied "It beats commuting." Mr. Whitaker and his wife have two children and reside on post. THE OFFICE of die Chief is responsible for a wide range of functions. For example, it programs maintenance and repairs for everything from simple typewriters and adding machines to giant bulldozers and complex remote control samplers. This is done by regularly reviewing maintenance records of existing equipment to determine their short comings. Any defects in equipment are readily taken care of by the branch which is responsible. The Office of die Chief is also responsible for maintaining a calibration program for test and measuring equipment Second Lieutenant Robert F. Peelor is die deputy chief of the division. He arrived on Dugway three months ago from Fort --old Eustis, Virginia. LT Peelor is married and has a daughter. He is a graduate of Georgetown University in WashD.C. ington LIEUTENANT PEELOR commented that there are approximately 150 persons working in the Consolidated Equipment Division. He estimated that 90 of these are civilian employees. The Equipment Pool Branch is headed by 2LT Homer R. Hickam. There are approximately 36 people working within this branch. Military personnel comprise most of this total. The Equipment Pool Branch provides motor transportation services for all post personnel, dispatches vehicles and equipment and maintains utilization records. The branch operates two motor . pools (approximately 200 vehicles in each) - one in English Village and one in Ditto Area. The branch also provides a government licensing facility for qualifying driven and equipment operators. MR, DONALD C. Heebner is the chief of the Calibrations -Branch. This branch assures that test and measuring equipment used , in the test and evaluation of Army materiel is calibrated at sped- - ' fied intervals and that certified accuracy is traceable to the National Bureau of Standards. Sufficient standards are maintained at die laboratory to meet 98 per cent of Dugway's known calibration needs. Remaining calibration functions are performed by various depots which have specific capabilities. Calibration service is also provided to Deseret Test Center by this branch. The Heavy Equipment Branch is run by Mr. Kenneth W. Antry. He arrived at Dugway in 1950 and has remained primarily because he likes die area's seasonal changes. There are' tea persons working in this branch, seven of whom are heavy equipment mechanics. The remaining three work in the office. At the Heavy Equipment Branch, located in Ditto Area, approximately 375 vehicles are maintained and repaired. THE VEHICLES in Heavy Equipment Branch range from track vehicles to large cranes. All of these vehicles receive reguThis service is recorded larly scheduled maintenance check-upon work orders. Just as a doctor records his patients' health progress in his files, the Heavy Equipment Branch records maintenance service on work orders. This enables die branch to keep a of each and every vehicle. close eye on the overall Mr. Robert E. Cudd is the chief of the Instrumentation branch. He has worked here since 1952 and now lives in Tooele. Instrumentation Branch provides assistance in the fabrication or procurement of instruments, devices, and specialized equipment and facilities to be utilized in testing programs. FOR EXAMPLE, they may provide electronic, sampling and communications equipment during a test. At the same time, they may supply the metal working facilities needed to fulfill die test program. Instrumentation Branch is composed of four sections: the Electronics Section, Metal Working Section, Section and Sampler Section. There are 53 persons within the branch, only six of whom are military personnel. The Motor Maintenance Branch chief is Mr. Calvin C. Hutehins. His large shop is located in English Village next to die Motor Pool. Here, over 450 vehicles regularly receive emergency repain and scheduled maintenance. The shop is well equipped and employs 25 persons to handle the large maintenance program here at Dugway. DURING AN interview, Mr. Hutehins mentioned the importance of preventive maintenance. "Our shop receives many vehicles requiring repairs which could have been avoided if only the driver had properly checked out his vehicle before leaving die Motor Pool Lf unnoticed,' these simple malfunctions get :'. worse and worse." He pointed out an engine which had recently been replaced. It was completely worthless because a piston had been fused to the engine's walls. What went wrong with it? What caused the entire engine block to be repaired? A driver had forgotten to check his water and the engine had literally burned up! Mr. Hutehins asked that we all perform the preliminary checks on all vehicles to insure a minimum maintenance and maximum safety program. The Office Machine Repair office is located in Fries Park. Mr. Edwin J. Mcintosh and his assistant, Mr. Cordon A. McLachlan, run the whole affair. It is the responsibility of the Office Machine Repair Branch to supervise the repair of office machines performed on a contract basis and to provide office machine repair, services for all of Dugway.
