And it takes approximately five days to float the supplies the 178 miles from Lees Ferry to the study area, Dr. Hamblin reported. The ride down the canyon is in some places, especthrilling ially where the waves of the rapids are 10 to 12 feet high, he says. But the greatest hardship of all is just to exist for two to four weeks in such a remote area. We dont take any drinking water because it requires too much space and weight. When we get thirsty, we just, dip into the river and come up with a cup of murky water. If we of the cup let it settle, is silt, the geologist said. So to give the water a palatable taste, we mix a powdered orange juice with it just to make he it better, psychologically added. TEST D0RIHGS any now Ttelr Properties to IWMteh or Majar CaapaaiK. M4- - VOLCANIC FORMATIONS It was the detailed report by Major Powell (with some very striking drawings) that led Dr. Hamblin to become interested in the volcanic formations in the Grand Canyon area. Since coming to BYU in 1963, Dr. Hamblin has studied the volcanic formations from the air as well as by land and boat. He has made some startling discoveries: fossils the size of pinto beans at the Itottom of the canyon where the earth's oldest rocks can be seen, and evidence that the canyon was dammed up by natural lava flows in several places. The inaccessability to these Powell formations that volcanic discovered is fantastic. We can get to the area by dirt road, but that leaves us on a cliff 3,000 feet alxwe the river.
