Deer Hunt is Trouble For Elk and Moose Utahs deer hunt may mean trouble for a number of the states elk and moose which fall to the hunters gun illegally. Moose and elk killed illegally during deer season are not only usually wasted, but the loss also means fewer animals available for elk and moose hunters the next year. Additionally, wildlife officers must take time from their regular deer hunt law enforcement duties to locate and attempt to salvage these animals. Wildlife Law Enforcement Chief John Nagel notes that hunters in the field can be the best deterrent of illegal killing. They can give descriptions of the persons shooting the elk or moose, vehicle license numbers, or any other information which will help bring violators into court, to wildlife officers. The Division of Wildlife Resources rewards anyone giving information which leads to the arrest and conviction of persons illegally killing elk or moose. Conservation officers may be contacted through the nearest Utah Highway Patrol dispatcher or through any police officer. Mangement Director. Storms have deposited snow as low as 7,000 feet elevation but roads on BLM administered land in the state are generally in good condition. Some may become muddy, slick and even- impassable with additional storms. On some back country roads four-whedrive vehicles may be necessary. Recent storms have reduced a fire hazard on the BLH administered national resource lands. However, there are large places of cured grass in many areas and conditions may become haard-ou- s if a drying period occurs. He urged hunters to be careful with all fire including cigarettes and warming fires but to use particular caution in aspen areas because of accumulations on the ground of dead leaves from the trees. Mr. Leavell suggested that motorists carry extra motor fuel with them because small towns in Utah sometimes have only a limited supply. The director encouraged hunters to keep a clean camp and leave a clean camp. If trash cans are not available at a camping site, hunters should carry their trash to established collection points. Burying garbage is not considered acceptable because it will soon be dug up by wild animals. BLM administered camps in Utah will be available for public use until after the deer hunt. As a final comment he stressed that hunters always should obtain permission of property owners before crossing private land. All private property, such as fences, wells and watering places should be respected and protected. Gates should be left as they are found. Signs should not be used as targets. . - el Sportsmen should be deciding which of the 48 posted pheasant hunting units they want to hunt when the season opens NovemSale of the 30,380 permits began as early as October 15 on seme units. Hunters who can go afield on week days will have only four posted units to choose from this year, with a total of 325 permits. Posted pheasant hunting unit lists are available from Division of Wildlife Resources offices.
