Health Guide Offers ' Salt Lakers Named As HEW Advisors Advice for Designing a research project to study bat habits was not a simple matter for University of Utah graduate student Lewis Ershler. What he needed was a made to order electronic device that could not only detect bat movements in the dark, but also control the laboratorys source of artificial daylight. He got his bat detector a first in the biological research world, through the ingenuity o' members of the University of Utah Instrumentation Research Laboratory (IRL), where made to order inventions are pari of everyday business. Charier L. Alley, professor of electrical engineering and director of the facility, believes the University service may be the only one of its kind in the nation. The diversity of requests received by the U lab provides experience to fill the interests and needs of mest student appli cants. Another device, an automatic coin vendor, makes change for a dollar in one second and can dispense ten quarters in one and a half seconds and 50 pennies in less than 8 seconds.
