Senior high school students in fluoridated Preston, Utah have 45.6 less decay than senior high school students in Logan. Fluorides are being used in other less effective ways to control decay, especially people in communities that do not have fluoridation. The American Dental Association recommends fluoride tablets where water supplies are not fluoridated and although not as effective as water fluoridation, they do help reduce dental decay. The use of these non-fluoridat-ed fluoridide dentifrices are also recommended, particularly for children. Additionally, fluoride can be applied directly on the childrens teeth at periodic intervals in fluoride treatments in the dental office and by brush-i- n applicatoin. Scientists are studying a new plastic material called sealants which is applied to tooth surface to seal the pits and fissures in teeth to provide protection from tooth decay. The pits are fissures are especially prone to decay. Studies of the sealants have shown that it appears to form a barrier between the tooth surface and decay causing bacteria which are always present in the mouth. Preliminary investigation indicates that the sealant may withstand chewing, forces in the. mouth for as long as a year. Because the sealant only protects the chewing surfaces of the teeth, we must still rely on fluoridation to protect the of the exposed tooth. Scientists are studying other methods of preventing decay, including trying to isolate specific bacetria which unite with foods and other debris in the mouth to form decay causing acids. Emphasis must be placed upon proper home care. With the use of newer methods of properly brushing and flossing, dental decay and gum disease can be substantially reduced. Unfortunately most people will not take time to effectively practice efficient and proven oral cleansing procedures, yet those who d realize savings in teeth, health, money. Individually tailored use of dental floss, brush and othed dental aids, which result in the proper removal of bacteria pique is now called by dentists a Control program." If this control is even coupled with fluoridation an immense reduction in dental decay is noted. Even today it is possible to reduce decay significantly if you re-man- drink fluoridated water, practice good oral hygiene and see your dentist for regular checkups. Things do not change; change.
