Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1971 Program Aimed at Facing Life's Problems Launched in Schools Unimproved Farm Land Interpretation A new program aimed at helping students become rational, effective, spiritual human beings, is being launched by the Utah State Board of Education. According to Dr. Ferrin Van Waggoner, State Coordinator of Secondary Education, the program's purpose is to help gain understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to ably handle lifes problems and actively demonstrate the effective use of these powers." Geared to Utahs high school students, the new program was prompted by a desire to more closely tie the school curriculum to the individual students needs. Right now, the project is in the planning stage. After further refinement, three school districts will put the program into effect beginning with the 1972-- 3 school year. Nebo, Park City and Weber School Districts will be the first to apply the new concept in education. The new program of studies will allow greater flexibility in meeting the needs of the individual students goals and problem. Even traditional graduation requirements will undergo some changes. Each student, in with his parents and teachers, will work out his own schedule of studies. For instance, a child who has demonstrated a proficiency in music may study music during part of the school day. Minority or ethnic students may want to work out a program of studies which will allow them to become better acquainted in cultural history or language. Students who desire vocational experience and education will be stut-den- ts USDA to Reauthorize Food Stamp Retailers Retailers currently authorized by the United States Department of Agriculture to accept food stamps are being reauthorized and assigned new numbers. Charles M. Ernst, regional administrator of USDAs Food and Nutrition Service, said the reauthorization is necessary to achieve automatic data processing of redemption certificates sent to banks for credit to the retailers account. Previously, these certificates were then sent by banks to the local food stamp office where a transaction record is maintained. This involved individual handling of thousands of redemption certificates monthly, and with full implementation of automatic data processing by March 1, 1972, this manual work will be eliminated. the Computers will pre-priaustores name, address and thorization number on the redemption certificates, requiring the retailer only to fill in the value of food stamp transactions, sign and date the card. In Los Angeles County, and three counties in Washington, (King, Pierce and Snohomish), participating . grocers already have been authorized and assigned new numbers. In the remainder of the western region, February 29 is the last day old authorization numbers will be valid, and only those retailers with new authorization numbers may receive and redeem food stamps effective March 1. nt ed to be that which contains no building construction and that clearing, fencing, cultivating or Clarence J.
