Can you give me any additional information on how the Department of State and the U.S. Information Agency select new Foreign Service officers? N.C.M. Boulder, Colo. Dear N.C.M.: The written exam, which will be held Dec. 4 in 290 cities in the country is the first step in selection of new Foreign Service officers by the Department of State and the U.S. Information Agency. The exam is offered only once a year and this year applicants must apply no later than Oct. 31. Application forms may be obtained by writing to the Board of Examiners, Dept, of State, Washington, D.C. 20520. Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 54 as of Dec. 4, 1971, with the exception that an applicant who is 20 years old is also eligible if he has successfully completed his junior year in college. The previous maximum age limit of 31 has been waived this year. An applicant must also have been a U.S. citizen for a minimum of 7 years as of the date of the written test. There are no specific educational requirements for Foreign Service officer candidates; however, successful completion of the written exam requires some knowledge of foreign and domestic affairs, current events, and U.S. history, government, and " culture. Most candidates are college graduates, but a college education is not required. Men and women with professional or vocational experience are encouraged to take the written test. This year the Department of State is especially interested in recruiting candidates with experience in economic, commercial and administrative work. The exam lasts a full day and consists of three parts: general ability, English expression, and general background. There will be no foreign language tests as in past years. Candidates who pass the written exam are eligible for an oral exam, the second step in the selection process. Successful applicants are then subject to a background investigation and medical exam, after which a final review of the candidates qualifications is made. Today, all consumers, regardless of income, need education in how to shop for food in such a way as to get the best nutritional values and satisfaction in return for the dollars spent. Studies revealed that a surprisingly large number of Americans are under nourished, not because of lack of money, but because of lack of interest and knowledge in the entire nutritional area. With the idea of improving the nutritional status of our people, the Food Council of America is sponsoring nationally a Nutritional Awareness campaign. The campaign in Utah, which is sponsored by the State Nutrition Education Committee, began this week when Governor Calvin Hampton signed a Declaration proclaiming October as Nutrition Awareness Month. 1. To help all consumers become more knowledgeable food shoppers. 2. To improve the eating habits of all Utahns; and 3. To increase the knowledge of and use of nutritionally bene- Appointments are made competitively without regard to race, creed, sex, ethnic background or marital status. Starting salaries for the new Foreign Service officers in both the Department of State and the USIA range between $8,600 and $12,000. Top salary in the Foreign Service is now $36,000 at the senior level. In addition, the salaries of officers on overseas assignments are supplemented, depending on local conditions, with housing, cost of living and hardship post allowances as well as educational allowances for deficial foods. pendents. At the Uath School for the Deaf, however, things are different. This falls class of Homemaking I for instance, is composed of five boys and one girl. The class meets daily for 45 minutes and boys as well as girls are required to take it. Robert Fletcher, curriculum coordinator for Career Education at the school, explained that most of the schools 285 students live on campus. This means, he said, that all students need to learn basic home skills for .use in their every day dormitory living. Another purpose of the class is to prepare students for prospective jobs. Homemaking I gives the students a chance to preview the skills required for careers in commercial food occupation such as the restaurant and bakery businesses. In this first of three homemaking classes, students learn home making terminology, measuring, and simple recipe reading. They also begin to do some cooking. Mrs. Claron L. Haglund, who teaches the class believes the biggest problem involved in teaching homemaking to the deaf students is vocabulary. A recipe for chocolate pudding, for example, may use a measuring and ingredient vocabulary which is foreign to the deaf student word experience. After passing Homemaking I, students progress into Homemaking II and III. There the students are exposed to more advance aspects of home making such as laundry care, sewing and furniture care. Homemaking II and III also prepare students to enter the vocational program. The program allows individual students to choose vocational courses which are best suited to their own interests and abilities. The school offers career training in a wide variety of areas, among them: auto mechanics, business education, barbering and beauty culture. The Utah School for the Deaf is located in Ogden and admits any student between the age of two and 21, who is a Utah resident and is unable to make satis factory progress in a regular school due to an aural handicap. rr PHOSPHATE NOT PROBLEM . 7&clt 7'ie4&ed by Thelma Bonnem FOR A NATURAL LOOK ' Wllat beauty secret did reminiscent of that era.
