The Conference is sponsored by the Utah Safety Council and the American Society of Safety Engineers, Utah Chapter. An outstanding array of national, state and local safety leaders will discuss important aspects of traffic, occupational and public safety. The largest display of new safety equipment and services in Utah will also be a feature of the Conference, with both commercial and official exhibits. The conference delegates, expected from all areas of the state, will be welcomed by Governor Calvin L. Rampton. The keynote address will be delivered by Stephen Covey, Assistant to the President, Brigham Young University. 25-2- If, in your driving, you have ever noticed something that you considered unsafe about the design of the road, your car, other vehicle or the traffic system in general, you may have wondered, Why doesnt somebody do something about that? The fact is somebody probably is at least conducting research into the very condition that has struck you as hazardous, and its from this research that many of the recent traffic safety reforms have come. Below are some of the areas in which the National Highway Safety Bureau has awarded research contracts recently, and the amounts of the contracts. From time to time in the future, research programs that are of particular interest tb the typical driver will be reported in this underneath them. The latter topic will be handled by two-waclosed television communication between Detroit and Salt Lake City. The occupational sessions will include discussions on safety codes, how to sell safety, industrial eye safety, successful safety programs in electrical and engineering plants, and the role of the insurance industry in occupational safety efforts. The first days general session will be directed by Dr. Milton Utah Safety F. Hartvigsen, Council president. The second day general session will be directed by Willis E. Larsen, President of the Utah Chapter, American Society of Safety Engineers. A highlight of the Conference will be the announcement and presentations of awards to the winners of the first annual Julian Bamberger Memorial Traffic Safety Award Plan. Approximately 500 delegates are expected to attend, representing business and industry, state and local officials, civic and service clubs, and local safety organizations. Those planning to attend are invited to register in advance to avoid the late registration rush. This can be done by requesting a form and program from the Utah Safety Council, 307 State Office Building. Kicks and harsh words may pass between mule and man, but a bond of affection often develops. Mules and small southern farmers have been closer partners than man and horse or man and dog, wrote Ralph McGill, the noted Georgia editor. For the small farmer, the mule was his one indispensable possession. On some farms in the south, the mule still is a most important animal, the National Geographic Society says. A pair of mules drew the farm wagon bearing the body of Dr. Martin a touching Luther King, Jr. of animals the symbol standing. The mule has been bred since times. A cross between a male donkey and a female horse, the mule combines the best features of both parents. It has the wit, sobriety, endurance, and surefootedness of the donkey; the strength and bulk of the horse. It thrives on poor food and withstands cold or blistering heat. Stubborn and mule go together like love and marriage, but the link may be unfair. The animal's stubbornness often is self - preservation. Unlike the horse, the mule has an uncanny ability to look after to the despair its own health of its driver. Wise, District Director of Internal Revenue for Utah announced today that a special examination will be given on September 26 and 27 for accountants and others who wish to represent taxpayers in matters before the Internal Revenue Service. Tax practitioners who are not certified public accountants, attorneys or qualified former IRS employees must establish their technical competence before they can represent their clients before IRS. Technical and ethical standards for this right to practice are set by the Treasury Department. Last year approximately 750 practitioners took the exam. At the end of the Civil War, no less than a thousand Union soldiers qualified for disability pensions because they got too close to the combat end of a mule. The 19 th century humorist Josh Billings once said, Ive known mules to be good for six months so as to get a chance to kick. Some experts say, however, that mules are no worse kickers than horses. Mules probably were first bred in western Asia, where horse-usintribes met the donBreeders learned that the key. are almost hybrids invariably sterile, giving rise to the saying: A mule has neither pride of ancestry nor hope of posterity. Roman royalty prized mules. The Empress Poppaea had golden shoes made for her mules, while the Emperor Nero made do with silver. The beasts still are widely used in the Mediterranean region. George Washington, given a prize donkey by the King of Spain, actively promoted mulebreeding. By 1925, almost six million mules toiled on United States farms. But within 30 years the mule was, as one breeder said, tractored out. No tractor ever inspired the affection one North Carolina farmer had for his mule. After his faithful partner of 20 years died, the man committed suicide. He left a scrawled pencil note on a worn path: My old mule is gone.
