CAUTION ON IMPEACHMENT A note published in the Republic of South Africa World, refering to Figures provided by the U.S. Census Department Does Nixon Record Warrant Impeachment? last May states: Some 24 million American workers earn less than the one hundred rands a month which the U.S. State Tom Rose We are witnessing one of the strangest events in American political history. Less than one year after an TOMS CORNER Department recommended American companies operating in South Africa should pay their black employees. The State Department apparently is recommending that unskilled African workers employed by American-owne- d companies operating in South Africa be paid more than 24 million American workers. It should be remembered that many African workers who are said to be receiving low wages receive also board, room and medical care free of charge. This is especially true of African workers employed in South African mines. The fact is that native African workers in South Africa are much better paid than blacks in other parts of Africa, and that a great many black workers from many parts of Africa travel hundreds of miles in order to find better jobs in South Africa. I have been in some of these mines in Africa down to a level of 4,000 feet and have seen whites and blacks working together, apparently in harmony. The whites earn more but the blacks are moving up as they acquire skills. One mine owner told me that in proportion to work performed, his black workers cost him more than his white workers. Blacks and whites are working together in South Africa to improve conditions for both races. Much progress is being made and blacks and whites both desire to be left alone to work out tKeir own relationships in their own way without outside interference. The least we can do is not to . meddle in their affairs, but to allow them the same freedom to handle their domestic problems which we demand for ourselves. . Living Issues, 7960 Crescent Ave., Buena Park, California 90620 overwhelming landslide victory, the president of the United States is under intense pressure to resign or be impeached. This issue is of serious magnitude as to demand the serious study of every American. It is entirely possible that the charges being made against tlie president are not true. And it is possible that they are true but do not justify removal from office. It is also possible that the president has committed other offenses which might be even more serious than those unearthed in the Watergate episode and which are not even being mentioned. feature of the Arab-Israe- li conflict renewed deserves njentioning It is common that America is knowledge supplying the Israelis with planes and other armaments. It is also commonly known that Russia is doing the same for the Arabs. But what isnt widely recognized is that American productive capacity and technology is supplying both sides in the conflict. A little-recogniz- ed number The of . The Pot Calling the Kettle Black U.S. corporations that hungrily seek to trade with the Reds has grown by leaps and bounds. Both present in and past Administrations have Washington encouraged increased trade with Communist countries. Much of this trade really amounts to outright gifts as camouflaged long-ter- so-call- ed ready-to-opera- tb at a government-manipulate- d, price still, in the process of being shipped from this country! Under the clever guise of these credits" which long-ter- m arc paid for by American taxpayers, our National Government has encouraged U.S. firms to ship highly sophisticated machinery, computers, and industrial tools to Russia. The big thing now is the erection of turn-ke- y plants, oil refineries, grain all on credit, mills, and the like of course. Without the costless addition of such productive facilities (costless, but not that is, to the Russians costless to U.S. taxpayers), the Kremlin would' find it economically impossible to equip and arm Egypt and her Arab allies. Thus it is not difficult to see that America is really waging war on herself. (This same situation existed in Vietnam. Only there American boys w'erc paying with their lives in credit addition.) Last years wheat deal, for instance, gave Russia some sorely needed food supplies. Without this extra backlog of food, Russia w ould have had to divert part of her war material capacity over to the production of food supplies. Any competent military man recognizes that food is indeed a weapon of war just as much as guns, tanks, and planes. And most of the wheat that we sold" to Russia - It is the observation of many that the Watergate capers, while serious, are not the most serious offenses of which Mr. Nixon appears to be guilty. For example, consider the illegal usurpation of power Mr. Nixon has gathered into the his hands. Take just one issue, for example Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Under this long-terpromote credit sales to a country that has openly avowed its continuing , judicial function right in the executive branch of the lhis violently violates the concept ot government. separation of powers which is the cornerstone upon which our constitutional republic is laid. Without separation of powers, we do not have a republic guaranteeing the liberty we have potential tyranny. Indeed; of every American under OSH A, we have had tyranny, and a pretty good taste of it When President Nixon took office, he took a solemn oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. It is obvious that he has flagrantly violated his promise to the people and his oath of office. This alone could justify impeachment. The strange thing is, that most of the wolves now at the throat of the president are just as guilty as he is on such matters. United States senators and representatives also take oaths to support the Constitution. When they voted for such monstrosities as OS HA, they the violated their oaths of office just as violently president. Consequently, in the case of many of those who are calling for the impeachment of the president, it is a case of the pots calling the kettle black. In view of this, it is probable that many of those who are screaming tor impeachment are more deserving of it than is the president. Also, if it is to be they who will push the impeachment proceedings, it is probable that they will push for impeachment on the wrong grounds. Caution is the Word on Impeachment Since this writer has criticized some of the actions of the president, it might seem strange to some that he would urge caution on the issue of impeachment. If conducted in caution, an impeachment proceedings would more likely vindicate the president if he is innocent and convict him if as-di- d Cdntinued on page 4 The mm Independent Salt Lake City, Utah The Utah Independent it published by the Utah Independent each Lake City, Utah 84115.
