Seems that there was a different struggle going on in your state when the Mormons landed in Utah. They came west to conquer the wilderness and did a splendid job, too. Most of these wilderness advocates couldn't survive for twenty four hours in the wilderness anyway. There were 2,752 super-grad- e persons in 1963. By July of this year their numbers had increased to 4,909. The salary cost for this group was 549,105,000 in 1963 and 5172,831,000 as of June 30 this year. Moreover many of these executives have large offices and staffs resulting in increased salary costs for employees top-rankin- below the super grades. Fringe benefits for the people in this group are also very liberal and amount to about 16 percent of the payroll. As of June 30 of this year there were about 2,800,000 civilian federal employees. On the whole they are better paid than their counterparts in private industry. Vacation, sick leave and other privileges are more generous. The lowest paid presidential appointee makes S36.000 a year. When the top people are so generous with themselves, is it any wonder that the rank and file is unhappy. We shall never conquer the problem of inflation until we learn to stop trying to consume more than we are producing. Issuing more money does not produce more goods it only drives - prices higher. The fantastic salary and wage increases that have taken place since World War II could not have happened without a corresponding increase in the quantity of money. We are too selfish and too ignorant of economic facts and processes to maintain our freedom, our and our prosperity. The only way to save ourselves from the vicious circle of increasing the quantity of money accompanied by proportionate wage and price increases is to reactivate the restraints imposed upon all of us by the observance of the moral law of God. W'e must learn to tell the truth and to refrain from coveting and stealing. We must live by the Golden Rule and stop thinking selfish advantages over our fellows. An honest man in a free market gains wealth only by serving his fellows. In socialism or government-manage- d self-governme-nt economy he gains it through the exercise of political power. The stronger groups get more at the expense of the weaker groups. Trying to have more by increasing the quantity of money and upping our wages will work for a time for the stronger pressure groups but in the end it will destroy our dollar, confiscate the savings of the thrifty generations that have preceded us and bring upon the people of our country intolerable suffering. He that findeth his life through salaries, wages and fringe benefits imposed by coercion shall lose it.
