Rarick U.S. Representative 6th Congressional District, Louisiana THE IS ENVIRONMENT BEING INTO PROTECTED EXTINCTION Environmental overkill, those stringent restrictions forced on the American by people the Environmental Protection Agency in the name of ecology, has often done more harm than good to the environment. Foresters, and consumers homebuilders, alike are now paying for the ecohysteria that led to the total ban of DDT without a potent alternative. Congress and the public overreacted to the demands of "environmental authorities when they lobbiedfor the DDT ban in the 1960's. Now w e are losing millions of board feet of timber, costing millions of dollars each year, simply because professional foresters have no effective pesticide to control insect damage to forests. All other attempts at controlling these insects have failed. Tom Breitling to Speak Utah Women for Constitutional will hold their Government monthly meeting. November 16th at 8:30 P.M.. in the City Commission Chambers. Room 301. Enter building on the cast side. We have an outstanding speaker. This is an Everybody come. important meeting, pertaining to what is going on today in our national and heal government. The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand 8, 1973 An alarming destruction of forests on both the East and West coasts has resulted from massive insect infestation. The Gypsy and and Tussock moths have killed forests just as certainly as raging forest fire. In fact, last year alone the loss of trees to these two insects equaled the fury of several major forest fires. If this mutilation had been the result of fires, headlines would have rocked the country, along with demands for better forest firp protection. It is not only tragic but costly that w;e stand by and see hundreds and thousands of acres of beautiful and valuable timber land devastated annually by insect infestation, when we have the power to reduce the ravages of the effective, pests through controlled application of DDT. If the use of this pesticide is not made available soon, entire forests may be wiped out, with extensive secondary environmental damage resulting. Within the next week, the House Forests Agriculture Subcommittee, of which I am chairman, will hold public hearings on a bill to authorize and direct the Administrator of EPA to approve the use of DDT on forests and other agriculture lands to combat insect infestation w hen such action is required. This is a positive step toward more balanced ecological concern one which takes human and financial needs consideration. along into with environmental protection. Over-reactito the rhetoric of environmental protection has, in the case of DDT use on forests, actually resulted in a severe lack of environmental protection. Wed better take a long hard look at all on the alternatives before environment extinction. is protected BOOK REVIEW UNION THE WHEN by Tom Rose ( Professor of Economics. 2721 Ljeamcadow Dr., Plano University. Interspersed with his story are many jine nuggets of economic wisdom. He shows, for instance, the small portion of the sales dollar accruing to owners (about 4rc on the average) and the large proportion accruing to workers. He gives many examples of the ways in which important economic truth has been brought home to the men and women employed in this plant by the ingenious managers of the business. Howard E. We marvel at the political skill it took to secure the support of such an aggregation of divergent groups, many with totally opposing interests. To line up this support, Nixon would have had to make many contradictory promises, as is the way with politicians.
