J. Reese Hunter Editors Outlook To Fluoridate or Not to Fluoridate J. Reese Hunter In a meeting billed as one in which scientific facts only would be heard the Truth on Fluoridation Seminar held Wednesday evening, June 21, turned out to be mainly a testimony meeting from the pro side of the question. Those speakers against fluoridation presented much that was of a factual nature including slide documentation and statistics. In his presentation for fluoridation, Dr. Robert K. Maddock, Jr., conducted a smear campaign against the National Health Federation that tended to take some of the credibility out of his position. He mentioned the names of some people who, he said, wrere members of the National Health Federation and who had been charged and convicted of varying degrees of malpractice or illegalities. His scientific presentation did not contain any evidence of malpractice suits successfully waged against members of his own profession, however. If he had made such disclosures he may have come out on the losing end. Just recently, medical doctors were reported having difficulty getting malpractice insurance in Utah because of the number of lawsuits being waged against them. That does not mean that all of the suits were The object of his justified, but, in many instances they were. discussion seemed to be to discredit his opponents by painting them all with the same brush. The reasoning goes something like this: since some members of your side of the debate have been accused or convicted of breaking the law, then, all of you must be lawbreakers and charlatans. Hardly a scientific presentation based on fact. The speakers kept their presentations on a higher plane and chose to ignore this attack. In a somewhat windy summation speech, Dr. Victor Kassel kept repeating, I am my brothers keeper. Rather than sounding like the expression of love the scripture was intended to be, in the context in which it was being used it had a rather ominous sound. are trying to be our Keepers Certainly, the by the very nature of their program of forcing fluoridation on everyone. Before Dr. Kassel was finished he had drawn many guffaws of derision from an otherwise polite and patiently restrained audience. His opponents seemed pleased to have him make an appearance. L. C. Romney, Vice Chairman of the Board of Health, brought the meeting to a close and announced the Board would make a decision at some indefinite future date. If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns Switzerland has taken a course different from most of the world in the matter of guns. The Swiss are gun conscious and even wear sidearms when going to the polls to vote, not to intimidate anyone, but to demonstrate their willingness to defend their country and their homes against criminals from within or without their borders. Has this emphasis on guns and the free ownership thereof made the Swiss prone to violence? The Swiss have not been involved in a war since 151 5 and their crime rate is one of the lowest in the world. Even though the two, unconstitutional federal laws now in effect in the United States have proven to be worthless, government officials and politicians have begun an all-oattempt to pass legislation requiring the registration of all firearms. The Wallace shooting is being used for this purpose and Walter Cronkite was careful to point out that Governor Wallace is opposed to gun registration. To further discourage Americans from having guns and becoming proficient in their use, the Department of the Army was pressured by anti-gu- n fanatics into withdrawing from the annual National Shooting Match. Meanwhile in Viet Nam, a company commander of the 173rd Airborne Brigade revealed that marksmanship was so deplorable in the unit that they actually had to have target practice right in the combat area cases as targets. Army spokesmen claim using empty that they withdrew support from the National Shooting Matches to save $1,100,000 which is approximately the cost of one jet fighter. How many lives were lost in Viet Nam due to this downgrading of marksmanship we will never know. Since the murder of Bobby Kennedy by a man with a registered gun, Senator Dodd and other emotional liberals have joined the Communists and crackpots in a cry for registering of all firearms. Mr. John Schooley, former president of the National Rifle Association, commenting on this irrational reaction to crime points out the futility of attempting to reduce crime by legislation that depends upon criminal cooperation for its success. Mr. Wallace was also shot by a registered gun. Whether guns are registered or not, criminals will kill until the punishment is again suitable to the crime. -Let Freedom Ring! gun-contr- ut on The Utah Independent is published by the Utah Independent each Friday at 1399 South 7th East, Suite 9, Salt Lake City, Utah 84105. In a previous meeting on fluoridation, Fred W. Morrison correctly pointed out that the issue of fluoridating everyones water supply was not a votable one. He spoke of the inalienable rights of man, the violation of which even the government could not do without itself breaking the law of the Constitution and the spirit of the Declaration of Independence. In our opinion, the moral question of free agency involving human rights is the main thing at issue hcre.Whcre there is evidence on both sides of the question relating to the efficacy of water fluoridation, the final decision as to whether it is good or bad should be left to the individual. This can only be done by NOT fluoridating the public water supply thus leaving the individual free to make his own choice in the matter. We shall have more on this and shall report the Truth on Fluoridation Seminar in greater detail in our next issue. But because I love the truth I also find mysejf grieved when I observe that someone is arguing for a true principle from a basis of what is not true, for I know that their foundation is going to crumble, and, unless they can other truth which will cling-tprevent it, the crumbling of their incorrect foundation will send them tumbling into the abyss of o False Conclusions. Arguing that women never had it so good by pointing out the liberal divorce laws is like arguing that Americas freedom has never been so great by out what look like advantages of the Social Security laws. The point is falacious. Women headed down the road away from the special privileges granted them by kind and protective men a long time ago, and the laws which have made it easier andor more financially advantageous for a woman to obtain a divorce have done much to destroy her freedom, peace, satisfaction, and happiness, for they have destroyed the source of all these. The position of Wife is the most neglected job in America today, and our country is suffering greatly because of this fact. No nation can be any stronger than the women in it, pointing Continued on Page 3 |
