Show November Congressman Reefers Lloyd Aids yfrUook Nixons Money E.O. No. 10999 provides for federal control of all modes of transportation, control of By Mark E. Anderson highways and seaports. Mark E. Anderson In 1968 President Nixon and Utah Congressman Sherman Lloyd campaigned vigorously against inflation. Representative Lloyds slogan was, Cut Living Costs. Candidate Nixon declared on October 11, 1968: America cannot afford four years of Hubert Humphrey in the White House because Humphrey is for programs that would cause a spending spree that would bankrupt this nation. That same year at the Republican National Convention Mr. Nixon said: It is time to quit pouring billions of dollars into programs that have failed. Mr. Nixon had reason to complain, because presidents Kennedy and Johnson expanded the number of domestic spending programs from 40 to 473. Interestingly, Republican congressmen resisted all 433 new inflationary spending programs. However, once the Republicans were in the White House, President Nixon and Republican congressmen like Sherman Lloyd expanded, not decreased, every spending program for a staggering $47 billion deficit to date. That represents a $940 per year increase in taxes, mostly indirect, for every American family. President Nixon and Congressman Lloyd know that deficit spending causes inflation, so they have spoken out against deficit spending as the only realistic way of preserving the purchasing power of the dollar. On January 27, 1970, President Nixon declared: The inflation we have at the start of the Seventies was caused by heavy deficit spending in the Sixties. In the past decade the Federal Government spent 57 billion dollars more than it took in. These deficits caused prices to rise 25 percent in a decade. Yet President Nixon is now pushing, and congressmen like Representative Lloyd are voting for, spending increases resulting in the largest deficits since World War II. Latest estimates show that the 1972 fiscal budget will run something like $28 billion in the red. By election time next year President Nixon and congress will have run up a deficit of over $66 billion during the Nixon years, more than the Johnson and Kennedy administrations combined. At this rate the spending spree of the early Seventies will pollute the dollar by more than 50 percent. Some of Congressman Lloyds contributions to pollution of the dollar in the past sessions of Congress are: 1. Federal debt ceiling and Social Security increases $395 billion to $430 billion 2. National environmental data system $5 3. Emergency Public Service Employment Act billion (Rep. Lloyd failed to vote) $5.5 billion 4. HR 1 and Family Assistance Plan increase in first year 5. Wage and price controls with their attendant bureaucracy Money polluter Nixon said during the 1968 campaign: Budget deficits lie at the heart of our troubles. Inflation is the crudest tax of all; it quietly picks your pocket, steals your savings, robs your paycheck. To check inflation the government must cut down on unnecessary federal spending. Hypocritically Nixon has done the opposite, and March Congressman Lloyd has reported in his newsletter of 15th that the Administration has announced an attack upon inflation. Certainly wage and price controls are not the answer. Controlling inflation by wage and price controls is like trying to hold the lid on a pot of boiling water while turning is up the heat. The answer to inflation or money pollution to turn the heat down as Nixon and Lloyd have so often said but will not do. E.O. No. 11002 says the postmaster general shall require the registration of all citizens in the fifty states at their local postoffice. E.O. No. 11000 provides for mobilization of all civilians into work forces under federal supervision. Expressing dissent of any kind is not the healthiest way of life or any other Communist country. But the expanding ranks of Soviet dissenters have now been joined by Andrei D. Sakharov, the physicist who developed the Soviet hydrogen bomb. And his protest cut right to the heart of the entire Soviet system. Other dissenters have cried out against the Soviet secret police, phony criminal trials, unjust imprisonment and the total absence of any chance to speak or write freely. Sakharov, according to a protest he is said to have made Sept. 20 to the Supreme Soviet, would have the Kremlin grant every citizen the right to leave the country. This would include those already in prison for attempting to flee from Russias alleged paradise. No protest could have exploded with greater impact on the Kremlin. Its one thing for the Soviet brass to contend with dissent about criminal justice and free speech. It is quite another to be challenged by a respected member of the scientific intelligentsia on the essence of Communist security. Winston Churchill did not use the phrase Iron Curtain idly. No iron or bamboo curtain, no Berlin wall, was ever erected to keep people out. They serve only to restrain the inmates from fleeing in the Soviet Union federal takeover of all aircraft and airports. Instead of separating our peerless leaders into musty rooms underground, I suggest that they be kept together; that they breathe the same air we common folks breathe, in peace and war. If we get the word the bombs are coming, the leaders who led us to this end (I hope Owen Lattimore is back from Outer Mongolia by then) should be carried to Chicago, put on the playing Held at Soldiers Field, the gates locked and the keys thrown into Lake Michigan. This would be done in case we are attacked. If they surrender us, I suggest that they go to their bomb shelters and lock the doors on the inside. Our greatest threat is not fallout; its sellout.
