Richards, engineer who has been employed to take charge of Eureka citys new water project, has given out the following Information concerning the same: The specifications In the contract call for the enlargement of the city well to yield the culinary water needed by the city. The well is located In the porphyry formation to the northeast of the city end the drifts therefrom now extend east 880 feet end west 290 feet at the 100 foot level. Enlargement of the collecting galleries to 1100 feet In length, with Installation of a new well pump, Is expected to Increase the supply about five times. Plans also call for tha construction of a 100,000 gallon concrete reservoir to stare the water In order to make the city supply self sufficient. Repairing, extending and replacing the distribution system are contemplated, and at least 400 more water meters will be Installed in the city. City officials are, confident that this new development will allow e substantial reduction In the retail price of water to residents of this 80 city. Eureka today purchases per cent of Its water supply from private sources, the other 20 per cent coming from the city well. This etup requires the charging of lc per cubic foot of water to consumers and has been a real burden to those who have had to' use a large supply. Under the government program the bond Issue of the city will cover 835,000 for construction purposes and 22,000 for interest. The balance of 13,000 Is an outright gift or grant from tho government. The amount obtained from the bond Issue Is expected to be repaid from tho water department ael revenue, |
