Show THE CITIZEN o bay can be entirely eliminated by way of a dike. The federal government is going to expend $350,000 in building a dike for a duck preserve, but this dike to be efficient should begin at Willard LIVESTOCK EXHIBITS TO BE GREATEST IN STATE FAIR HISTORY ards. It is the determination of the Fair Association to treat all exhibitors with utmost consideration and send them away pleased with the treatment they have received. That the livestock show at the 1928 Utah State Fair, October 6 to 13, will be the largest and most distinctive ever seen on the exposition grounds, is the declaration of Jesse S. Richards, director of that department. Many notable exhibitors have reserved space and will be in with entries of finest breed and quality. Just enough time will elapse between the Oregon Fair and the Utah Fair to make it possible for exhibitors of national importance to transport their entries to the Salt Lake Fair grounds. This fortunate circumstance 13 FEW HUNTERS GET THEIR LIMITS FIRST OF SEASON THE CITIZEN accurately predicted results on duck hunting. We do not guess about fishing and hunting, but base our judgment entirely upon personal experience in the field. Less duck limits were brought in Bay. This would immediately produce the greatest duck preserve in the country and now is the time to act to secure economical results as well as beneficial to the duck hunters. The clubs in the neighborhood of the mouth of the Jordan river have nearly eliminated disease by constructing dams and dikes which makes it possible to control the water. Lands can be flooded or drained at will, thereby eliminating stagnant ponds where disease begins and such a system followed throughout would kill all disease among ducks in Utah. RAISE RABBITS. is expected to augment the Livestock exhibits to a degree that will put space at a premium. There will also be champion entries from several other states. Judges of national importance will be employed to make the awards in the various divisions of the livestock departments. Such celebrities as J. HI. Riley of Thorton, Ind., will judge t the big show. The cash awards will this year be greater in total amount than ever before. The increase is made to meet this new ruling of distributing prize money out to sixth and seventh places. There will be inore breeds exhibited than in any former year of the State Fair. That the Utah Fair has by far the largest livestock department of any state exposition in the West, was the statement of Mr. Richards. Its facilities for exhibiting are also among Qhe best. The two recently constructed stock show buildings, one for dairy and one for beef cattle, are not excelled by any in America. The ventila- tion and lighting are said to be unique. Small exhibitors have exactly the same privileges and opportunity to win as the larger ones, said Mr. Rich . THE UNITED STATES Biological Service is encouraging people, and particularly boys, to raise rabbits for table meat. As an example of the saving and earning possibilities of rabbit raising, the Bureau cites the following concrete examples of what has actually been done. One resident of Kansas City, Kansas, has raised 400 pounds of rabbit meat a year for his own table, at a cost of between 8c and 10c a pound. A large institution in Nebraska that has raised rabbits instead of poultry reports the meat more satisfactory than chicken, and the experiment profitable. According to a former county agricultural commissioner of the State of Washington, than ever before, and from now on shooting in a majority of cases will be for the outing and not for the number of ducks killed. There are a few clubs in the state where excellent shooting will be had throughout the season because of their ideal location, and the lucky members will reap the benefit thereof. The local duck supply will be exhausted in another week, and if the northern ducks fail to come in again this season, our real duck hunting season will be cut very short. We are now reaping the well earned rewards for entirely ignoring the ducks and paying all our attention to fishing. Outside of making a few experiments in trying to solve the duck disease, no action has been taken to eradicate the disease which has caused the death of millions of ducks. It was obvious that this condition could not continue indefinitely without great injury, but clever politicians easily dodged the issue by camouflaging and the sportsmen are now paying the price. As a majority of the diseased ducks come from Willard Bay, it is imperative that this locality be taken care of and the diseased conditions at this ' rabbits were grown on the County Farm to provide a substitute for chicken at the county hospital; the initial stock numbering 119 rabbits, increased to 1,200 in ten months, besides those used in the hospitals. A high school boy in Iowa, who raises rabbits on a space of thirty-thre- e feet square in his back yard, sold enough in one year to clear more than $1200. An Ohio farmer sends 400 pounds of rabbit meat a week to city restaurants yet is unable to meet the demand. AL SMITH professes a great love for the farmers of the West, but in the eight yean he has been Governor of New York he has never won the confidence of the farmers of that state for they have never voted for him. THE REPUBLICAN victory in Maine can be credited largely to women voters. There was a marked desertion by Democratic women from their pqrty, indicating that women everywhere this year are opposed to Smith and in favor of Hoover. From what I saw in Maine, I judge that the women are going to play an exceedingly important part in the November election. U. S. Senator Hale. SOME DEMOCRATS are going to be disappointed if A1 Smith doesnt suggest a feasible plan to bring back real beer before they die of thirst. Des Moines Leader.
