Mitchell Palmer, first WHAT the yearning Democrats to throw his hat in the ring? Has he usurped a presidential prerogative by daring to enter the contest without consulting Mr. Wilson, and will the thud of his large person soon be heard on the hard soil outside the battlements ? It is suggested that he asked and received permission of Mr. Wilson to enter the race. Usually a candidate asks his party to nominate him on his own merits, but apparently this procedure has been abolished ip some Democratic circles if it be true that the attorney general has requested the President to let him run. This opens a wide field for speculation. Other candidates will wonder whether Mr. Palmer is to be the sole candidate by the grace of Mr. Wilson or whether they are expected to step up, hat in hand, and crave the royal permission to file in behind the attorney general their ordered way to the nominating conand, so to say, lock-ste- p vention. And what will the freeborn American voters in the Democratic party say of such a procedure? Will they favor any candidate who is required to truckle to the imperi al will of a ruler who has become a dictator, or will they resent the tyranny and repudiate the timid Americans who are afraid to call their political souls their own ? But perhaps A. Mitchell Palmer, instead of being a timorous candidate, is a bold cavalier, a genuine Lochinvar, who is determined to carry off the nomination in the very teeth of the Presidents opposition. If so, we shall presently hear from a President whose heart is broken while the heart of the world continues to pulsate joyously. We shall hear that Mr. Palmer has committed the mysterious, unpardonable sin of which Mr. Lansing was guilty the nameless and shocking malefaction which may be described roughly and inadequately as thinking and deciding for oneself. In that event Mr. Palmer will have leaped into the fray with all the notoriety of a loud explosion. His name will be no mere whiz-banbut a veritable Big Bertha throughout the land. He will be hailed with unrestrained acclaim by the liberated Democracy. All other candidates will have been relegated to the. sad silences. They will be condemned without further ado as too servile and cowardly to ask the suffrages of the people for the high and brave office of President. A. Mitchell Palmer will bask in the full glory of publicity as the audacious and defiant warrior who asserted his independence while his rivals crawled and fawned. While his opponents foregather under a sour apple tree and gnaw green grapes he will flash along the highways of public favor crowned with the conquerors wreath. As one proceeds the speculation becomes more alluring. Perhaps Mr. Palmer put it up to the President and Mr. Wilson found himself in a distressing dilemma. If he should say no, he would do himself injury in many ways. Obviously he must say yes even though his tongue were thick with the gangrene of envy and hate. Thus A. Mitchell Palmer might be entering the race with all the appearance of having the Wilsonian 0. K. writ large upon his virile toga, whereas, in sore reality, Mr. Wilson might spend long hours and even days together nursing his hatred of the presumtuous politician and hoping that he would break his neck before getting to first base. But let us allow ourselves the luxury of supposing that Palmer enters the race not only with the consent but the good will of the With a Thought of the Future You have a marked advantage in purchasing a home or building site in a residence property developed and financed by g, President. Does that exclude Herbert from the Democratic and eke the Republican party? If so, will that make him a Lloyd George liberal-tora unionist, a secessionist or a Sinn Feiner? It will be seen that the plot thickens dreadfully as we proceed. Only the Fates will be able to unravel it. We could go on tying the plot into harder and harder knots, but we will tak.e pity on the Fates and let it go at that. I 5 y, The sausage trust has been unlinked. Company.
