Medina former judge of the Second Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals (Bar Wives and the General Public arc invited to this event) SOCIAL EVENTS THURSDAY: 12:00 noon Bar Wives-- No Speakers To Highlight Host Luncheon - May 958 -The 27th annual convention of the Utah State Bar SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH 1 5, 1 Association convened today at the Hotel Utah under the chairmanship of James P. McCune, president. According to Arthur A. Allen, convention committee chairman, a number of national figures are scheduled to speak, including U. S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black and retired U. S. District Court Judge Harold R. Medina. Justice Black, regarded by many as one of the most controversial men of our times, will address the Thursday afternoon session. Appointed to the Supreme Court by President Roosevelt in 1937, he was one of the strongest supporters of the New Deal and was influential in many of the depression Acts, including the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Judge Medina became known as the patient judge, when, as U. S. District Judge, he presided over the famous trial of the 11 Communist leaders in 1949. For his handling of this trial, he was voted Man of the Year in 1949 by Associated Press newsmen. A number of noted lawyers from all over the country will address the convention, including W. Page Keeton, Dean and Professor of Law, University of Texas Law School; John P. Frank, Phoenix lawyer and author of Mr. Justice Black; George D. Gibson, Richmond, Virginia lawyer; and Sanford H. Kadish, Professor of Law, University of Utah. Judge Medinas speech , scheduled for 3:00 p.m., Friday, May will be open to the public. A Look at America, will be the 16, subject of Judge Medinas speech at the Lafayette Ballroom in the Hotel Utah. The Womens Auxiliary of the Bar Association is also planning a scries of social events, including their Annual Dinner Dance, Friday evening at the Starlite Gardens. Born and educated in Alabama, Justice Black received his Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Alabama. During the next 20 years, lie built a law practice in Birmingham, interrupted by terms as city police judge and county prosecuting attorney. During this period, he also served as Adjutant, 19th Artillery Brigade during World War I. In 1926, he decided to run for U.S. Senator, and on a ticket as the poor mans candidate, was elected. As Senator, Justice Blacks career rose steadily and in 1932, lie was reelected by a strong majority. As a New Deal Senator under the first Roosevelt administration, Justice Black was influential in many of the depression Acts, including the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. As one of Roosevelts strongest supporters in the New Deal, Justice Black was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1937, the first such appointment the President made in his attempt to increase the Supreme Court from nine to 12 members.
