A pedal from Cripple Creek to the Telegraph uji: The beginning of work npoa the long projected Cripple Creek drainage tviiael was celebrated here today bp feetirltlee participated in bp the moat prominent mining and bualneea wen ef the leading cities and towns in the siale. Weather conditions were per feet and excursion trains from all pans of Colorado bare poured hundreds of visitors into the camp. There is general rejoicing throughout the Cripple Creek district over the prospect of rejuvenescence of tho famous wining camp. The big tunnel will nn water and permit the opening up of virgin territory containing, it is estimated, over fxnu.VOO.Ow worth of gold ore and will prolong the mining life of Cripple Creek twenty .tear. About fourteen gears ago Win held Scott Stratton, a Colorado Springs carpenter, began spending his scant earnings in prospecting some outcroppings la the Cripple Creek cow pa lure. On tho Fourth of July, 1891, he located a claim on a vein which gave him rich sways and he called that claim The Independence. He subsequently located many other claims In that nrighlxiihood and a few years ago Hold his property to an English syndicate for fiOjittti.OOO, after many million from It himself, In the succeeding yean the Creek cow pasture was trans. Cripple formed into a booming mining camp. ' When the high grade ore bodice on the known vein had been extracted down to the point the water 'troubles of the district began. A drainage tunnel was, therefore, conceived and eventually driven to cut the main water courses of the district at depth of 690 feet, but that tunnel was not deep rnongh. The shafts noon reached the tunnel level end water troubles were again encountered. After months of investigation it was determined to drive a deep drainage tunnel which mould drain the ramp at great depth. The cost of such nn undertaking la enormous, Approximating one million dollars. The mine owners; the citlaena of Colorado and the railroads and smelters, joined forces and contributed to the miring of a fund anffleient to drive the tunnel. The work was started s lew weeks ago and la progress-luas fast as tura and money can carry it forward. The ports 1 of the tunnel Is located on the stream known as Cripple Creek aul Is situate! at an elevation of O.U feet shove sea level. It will drain th entire Clippie' Creek district at a depth of abont 19.10 feet from the surface, ef 739 feet below the present water love!. The district la drained at present by the El Faao tunnel which rills the El Paso mine on the west aide of the district (on Beacon h'li), at a depth of about 600 feet from the surface and the Vindicator mine, on the cast side of tho camp, at a depth of 1378 feet. It will, therefore, L.e seen that the new tunnel will drain tho Beacon hill section at a depth of n'jnut 1530 feet and the east aida at a depth of about I.U00 foot from the surface. ' The deepest shaft In the camp la now about 1,500 feet The new tunnel will, therefore, make available all the wap from 700 to 1.309 feet of additional ore bodies below the present water level and this will add millions In production, ' The length of this tunnel, from its portal to the main contact near the El Paso shaft, at which point It be0 gins to drain the district, is about feet Figuring at the rate of ISA per toot. It would cost 1799,999 to this point To continue It to the Vindicator, a further distance of 13,900 feet as estimated, would cost an additional 1360,000. - It la figured that It will take about two years to dig to the contact and to two pears between one and one-halonger to build the tunnel to the Vindicator abaft, or a total of from throe and one-ha- lf to four pears to construct the tunnel. But all this time ore will be extracted from the upper and reclaimed levels. The magnitude and importance of this project can be beat conceived bv means of figures showing what It will add, in dollars and cents, to (he worlds gold production. The Cripple Creek district haa thus far produced mors than 1200,000,000. During 1906 the production was nearly (17,000,000 and this rate of production haa been steadily maintained for years. It la estimated that the driving of the deep drainage tunnel will enable the Cripple Creek district to double Its present record. R.
