The movement la Union Pacific was the only one worthy or nu Ice. The strength of Union Pacific dominated the whole market and gave It activity. There was no news t explain the advance la Union Pacific. It was variously attributed to the formation of a stuck market pool to speculate la ihe stock sad to the expectation of some coming change in the affairs of the company that mould redound to the benefit of the stockholders. The sympathetic effect of the Union Pacific movement radiated through the market with diminishing effect lu storks more remotely connected with It, the greatest effect being shown on the more intimately connected transcontinental group. The sharp reaction la the wheat market gave some assistance to the advocates of high prices for atorki. The amount of unloading of wheat induced by the news of showers la the southwest continues to impress stock market sentiment with the large amount of speculative influence which has been at work In the recent wheat market and no detracted from the force of recent crop scare reports. Otherwise the day was unusually barren of incident and offered small help towards resolving the uncertainty a hlch bold the securities market la check. The price of copper made another advance In London today and gave some Impetus to copper securities. Reports from railroad traffic officials were of continuance of favorable conditions. The car situation Is reported easier, although this la attributed to an Increased supply of cars rather than to any falling off la traffic. Admissions are made, however, of eotna disposition mi tbs part of the manufacturers to cut down plana for extensions of work and hope bankers to discourage larger outlays at this time. This is accepted as showing some extension of the feeling which baa prompted curtailment of other plane to other flelda of industry. The keen competition la the London market for the newly arrived gold la looked upon with interest. The sharp bidding which advanced the price of the gold half penny, the small proportion secured by the Paris bidders, the continued fall in the sterling rate at Paris and the firmness of the sterling exchange market here all added to the likelihood that gold might be shipped from New York to Paris. The local money market waa not affected by the development and remained eaay. There waa unusually languid in- terert In the dividend making of Unit, ed States Steel directors, which la to occour tomorrow. This was largely due to the decline of any expectation of a change In the dividend rate to be declared. The statistics of earnings for the quarter and of orders on band are awaited with much Interest in stock market circle. 'There waa a feeling of satisfaction with the tranquil outlook reported In the labor field upon the eve of May day. Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value, 11,254,000.
