The purpose of the Improvement- Is to protect the works in time of spring floods by folding the steel dam into longitudinal pocket in the main structure, thus reducing the height of the dam shout four feet In a very short time, and facilitating ths discharge of flood waters cutting around the ends of the dam and washing out the canals qnd head gates, and also reduce the pressure against the main dam itself. J. C. Wheelon, the chief engineer of tlie Utah Sugar company's canals and power plant, planned the work and the dam was built under his direction. This Is the first collapsible dam ever built In thla western country, and It la a great Improvement over the old form of dam, especially where much debris is carried down by the flood waters. Thla debris is caught In the framework of the ordinary ilam and causes dlasster. In the collapsible dam, when folded out of the way, there la nothing to prevent the free passage of all floating debris and all fear of damage from this cause Is eliminated. STEEL FORjU. AND 0.
