That there ao one injured but the driver of "Cowboy WOMAN'S BOMANCING. Nell" Turned Out to Be th Pal of Robbers, Balt Lake, May 18. The News say: It will be remembered by readers of the News that one day last week Nello Monticell, sometime known as Cowboy Nell'' a young girl hailing from Montrose, Colo., arrested in thla city, for endeavoring to ship ten pounds of dynamite of Dr Lamar, Xev., in her baggage. The girl aa'd that she was going to Nevada to pi 'ect. She was not afraid, either of i:ie hardships or the dangers of the desert. Dressed in male attire, armed with a brarbe of pistols and equipped with mining requlsLlr and camp paraphernalia, she would go out alone to seek for the yellow metal that would make her wealthy, and at the same time she would realise the romance and adventure that she longed to experience. Such was the young womans story, as told while in custody here. The dynamite was lulended she said, for blasting purposes in tha hill. It turn out that it was really meant to be used in blowing open safe and to help in schemes cf robbery in general. After being released from jail here, the girl expressed ike dynamite to De Lamsr.and proceeded to that town herself. There she told the same story, and gained 'the ears of many persons, including a number of women. Much interest was shown In the young girl of sixteen, who alone and unprotected would go into the wilds to seek her fortune. Prior to the arrival of Cowboy Nell" in De Lamar, Ibere had come to the same town a Pinkerton detective named Hicks. He was in quest of a Montana murderer named Hanson, whom he had Just located and was proceeding to gain the man's confidence, when he also espied another man, whom he sought for a similar crime, in the person of one Hughey Monroe. The confidence of Monroe waa also gained by the detective. The latter learned of Cowboy Nell" and of her Intended visit to De Lamar, where she was to meet Monroe. A bold scheme of robbery was hatched by Monroe and Hicks, In which Nell" was also to take part. Upon her arrival the plot was soon carried out. Three places were to be robbed in one night, namely Krsbett Bros.. Pete .and Barvlchi's Nesbett's waa tackled first by the trio, who had been joined by Frank Sanford, one of the company's employes. Hicks had men stationed outside the building and at convenient places on th outside. At 2 oclock a. m. he and his three pals crept up to the ' place intended to be robbed. Upon the shoulder of Hicks, Monroe, unfastened an' upper wrlndow. A shot rang out, fired from the lnftde and Monroe fell back, with a bullet in his left hand. The two officers on the outside then put in an appearance. They were espied by Cowboy Nell who attempted 19. 199(1. Prisoner In Attempting to Escape from Poof Jail Brought to Earth. Salt Lke, May lv Private Oscar Smith cf the Twelfth battery was shot while by Private H. Bartlett autmpting to escape from the guard house at Fort Douglas. Smith is probably fatally wounded, the bullet passing through his body above the right hip. Smith waa imprisoned for petty thieving alleged to havr boon done a few days ago while he was confined In je-unl- the hospital. He was to have been arraigned before a court martial. The shooting occurred about S o'clock yesterday morning. Smith, with other prisoners, had been put to work zoning supplies in the quartermaster's department. Smith succeeded in bolting through a rear door while the guard's attention was called for sn instant to some other matter. Smith began to run toward the foothills. Private Henry A. Bartlett,, on duty as a guard, railed to the running soldier to halt. This order wss repeated three time as demanded by military rule. Smith paid no attention to the guard's orders, but hastened hia speed. Bartlett, a crack shot of Company F, Twenty-ninth- , fired three shots at the fleeing prisoner, once to the right of him, once to the left and once over his head. These shots did not stop the fugitive. Bartlett adjusted the sights on Ids gun for 400 yards, aimed and fired. The soldier ran about twenty-fiv- e feet after being shot and then turning a complete somersault fell to the ground. He was carried to the hospital, where it was found the bullet had passed ihrough his hack above the right hip and passing through the body had come out through hia right side almost in a direct line. Wile the attending physicians were not able to learn what course the, bullet had taken through the mans body they held little hope for hia rrcovery after making a superficial examination. Aa Smith started to run toward the foothllla to the southwest, it ia probable that he Intended reaching Red Butte canyon in hope of, effecting hia escape. The Twelfth battery left Fort D. A- - Ruaaell a few day srgo. Smith was confined ia the hospital at the time and was not able to accompany his company. Officers at the post admit Smith waa held for trial upon a charge of petty theft, but will say nothing further. Citlxena who were In the neighborhood of the post at the time cf the attempted escape were commanded to stand hack, aa aeveral appeared anxious to join in the pursuit. An interesting feature of the shooting la that Smitlt la probably the first man In the United States to be shot with the new 19ns model Spring-fiel- d rifle. Greenville. S. C., Mat M.
