Sargent reports that imdemigration to the United State baa laat the year during creased materially and that the moral. Intellectual and physical qualification were higher than heretofore. During the year 812,-87- 0 alien arrived in the United Slates of whom 849,100 acre male and 262,-77-0 female. Tbia is a decline oi 44476. Mure than 47,000 foreigners were turned hack for various reasons. It alao appeeri that about 103,000 of theae had preriouly been In this country. Ninety five thousand brought with them full or more, cash each, while Col, 000 brought, each lose than $80. The total amount of money shown to oflicer by the 812,000 aliens was $20,894483, or $4.7711,670 more than waa brought by the 637,946 arrivals of but year. Twenty per cent of the Inmates of the peual servitude and charitable instiiutlniia of New York State' are alien, 24 per cent, in Massachusetts, 19 per cent, in Illinois, 42 per cent, in Montana. 14 per cent in WIsoonsin and 31 per cent in North and South Dakota. This sale has been larger during the past year than ever before showing that not only are the farmers in a Letter condition financially but they realise that they should make a wise and adequate outlay in the Improve ment of their methods of tilling the soil, and la tha adoption of the latest improved implements for this purpose. Along this lina the need of rapid and cheap transportation is receiving direct attention. The beet raisers of Plain City are actively engaged in aa effort to get a branch road extended through that district. Hitherto the crop has been entirely marketed through teaming, a slow, expensive and inadequate method of transportation in this age. The fact that there was no cheaper or more rapid means uf marketing the crop confined the farmers of that district virtually to a smaller acreage than they would oth erwlse contract. With the doubling of the capacity of the Amalgamated Sugar companys Ogden plant and the announced intention of trebling tha contracted acreage the Plain City fanners would be greatly benefited by ihe extension of a railroad to the locality for they would be enabled to contract an acreage, the crop from which could not be delivered nt the factory under the old conditions. It would also mean a material increase In the cash income for the farmers and a considerable Increase in the profits because of the reduction in the transportation expense. It Is to be hoped that the Plain City people will be successful in their efforts to obtain n railroad and that thereby their profits from beet farming will be immeasurably Increased. THE CITY OF. THE FUTURE. Monsieur Levy, secretary of Garden Cities of , FYance, which has tha responsibility of dispersing the proceeds of the Rothschild $2,000,000 for Improving the condition of the working classes, is now in New York as the guest of the American Institute of Social Science to study the question of city congestion. Ills association Is one of an International league whose purpose Is to divert population from the cities by creating centers of industry in the country, where provision can be made fur the proposed garden cities. The word garden is used here in its literal sense, for each house will be occupied by one family and will be surrounded by a garden. Nevertheless, the rent for these pretty and comfortable homes is only $1 a week in Garden' City, England.
