To the Board of Directors of th Carnegie Free library. Oguen, Utah: Ladies and Gentlemen: In submitting the first aunual report of tha Carnegie Free Library for the year ending May 81. 104, It la gratifying to nota the steadily increasing activity of tbe library, la spile of tbe Inability to supply tha demand for new tfooka. One of the moat encouraging signs aeema to be the growing interest which the parents take in their children's reading, many of them areum panying their children to the library. it wu found that so many of fhe books which had been in the old library were worn out, lost, or withdrawn that In order to. make the records of the library accurate and satisfactory, it would be necessary to and shelf-litbe entire library. There were in all about 7U0 missing volumes. The new shelf-li- st la completed and the accession book ia half copied. The moat important technical work of the year hu been tbe preparation of the card catalogue for the use of the public. Thia has taken moat of the time of tha librarian and assistant which could be spared from tbe every day routine work of the library. There are now 10,000 cards In the catalogue, which means that three thousand volumes have 'been catalogued, or practically nil hooka tn the library except the JuvenBe and reference works. The library la in possession of a very valuable collection of magazine and newspaper clippings, which 1i owes to the untiring efforts of the former librarian. These clippings have been anon classified in the past year, and It benomea possible to arrange them conveniently, they will be of great value In general reference work. An attempt hu been made to uve all pictures of famous buildings noted people, historical scenes and. In fact, anything which could be used by the teachers in connection with their school work. Generally when 1 asked about Ogden, some man would volunteer the information that there wss nothing here besides the big Union Depot, hut It srams to me that this Is about tha most pleasant business and residence rity I aver saw. It eartaia-l- y looks good to a Nevada man. Another thing, this is certainly great wholesalelng point. Nearly every thing w e buy in a store out In Nevada, seems to come from Ogden firms All winter I have beoa serving up pancakes to my men, made of Ogden flour. We sometimes had butter tn put on the pancakes, and when we did il was from an Ogden Creamery. Add to that, sugar from the Ogden Sugar Factory, and canned tomatoes and fruit from Ogden factories. When we asked for eggs we were told that they wera nice and fraah, and just from Ogden. "It aeema to me that our county la naturally tributary to thia rity, and that it la reasonable to expect that the people of Ogden ehould be vitally interacted In any good fortune that cornea to Elko county. We are going to have n mining boom out there, one that will equal the excitement at Ton-opand Goldfields That part of Elko county, which lisa north of tha Southern Pacific railroad, has produced over In gold and atlver up to $31,000,000 data and yet when people apeak of Nevada aa a mining atate they ara thinkh. ing of the Comstock ledge, and of What la Tonojiab to Ogden? It ia on tbe west aide of the state, near to the California line, and to get there you have to travel 700 miles besides tbe stage ride. But Elko county ta Jiiet across tha llns. only a few miles west of Lucln." Wa want to see Ogden people taae more Interest tn Elko oounty. Wa are nearer to Ogden," and of more Importance to this rity. than tha southern half of your own state. We have such Creek, mining camps ns Tusrarora. Gold Columbia, Edgrmont, and Mountain City. Tuacarora and Mountain City both report rich elrikee tn the past ten deye. Juat before I left Elko I telephoned to a friend at. Mountain Walker City, who told me that the Brothers had just etriich an enormously rich streak of tale, which waa fully one-thigold. This is la the mine which waa bonded by Mead of Salt IiUke last week for $50,000. As these men are taking out $1,600 n day. Mr. Mend will probably bare to produce his $50,000 before his fifteen days are up. By tbe way. Salt I.ake people seem to be active out our way. I have heard of a number of properties ti.at are bonded, or being Investigated by Salt Lakers, but Ogden people seem to pin their talth more to manufacare turing and wholesalelng. These all right, but I notice that the fine houses in Salt lake nearly all belong to mining men. It certainly aeema that Ogden people are overlooking their opfine portunity when they allow all the mining chances In Elko county so near home, to be taken by Salt lAke. We are going to snake some new millionaires out In Elko rounty In tbe next two or three years and I would like to see some of them register from Ton-opa- .
