The Examiner, with continued support and appreciation, can he bnllt up to be power lu defense and in of the doelrluea of Democracy. Emu thoae whose financial welfare does not run parallel with the aueccaa of thia paper, must admit that for the good of the party, it la fortunate that a morning dally, publishing the full Associated Presa dispatches and giving an excellent local news service, equaled by no other paper In the community, wherein sound Democrat ie doctrine ia act forth, has been established so auspiciously and with such bright prospects of enlarging Ha field of usefulness. Bclflshnesa would dictate that the Democrats of Ogden receive their party pabulum from one source and that a particular Democrat be advanced for office, to the disadvantage of ail opposing or divenwot Interests, but the Democracy that known no Individual ambition and ia based on broader grounds stands willing and ready to also aid the Examiner. We have no HI will for any oue, not even for thoae who have assailed us. They will receive Impartial treatment and fair consideration, and equally fair treatment from the opposition would do much to unite the Democracy of thia city. It la an abaurd position for group of Democrats to shout and at the sumo time send out emissaries to denounce those workers within the party whose business interest such aa publishing a newspaper, are not Identified with their financial welfare. This la making business and nelllsh ends and alma paramount to party. We seek no quarrel, but offer the hove ua an objection to the methods of thoae who are dealing unfairly with this paper. pub-.lish- nt r, i . TAXATION IN NEW YORK. New York State is to be without direct taxation. The Denver News says that of late years thia tax has amounted to wry little, the proceeds from Indirect taxation having been sufficient to cover almost wholly the stale's expenditures, hut still it has not been wiped out absolutely. The abolishment of direct slate taxation has been the dream and ambition of nearly every governor who has sat at Albany for the last twvnly-flv- e years, but none of them, up td a few years ago, was able to make morh headway In this direction, says the New York Commercial. The chtuf reason for thia was that most of the slate executives have hesitated to attempt to raise the state's nnremary revenue wholly by Indirect taxation, for taxation of this kind was believed to mean inevitably the taxation of corporations. With the enactment of the Raines high license law, however, the state's receipts were so heavily increased that but Rule additional indirect taxation was required to do away entirely with the direct tax. and, this additional taxation having been Imposed, it la now possible to relieve real estate and personal property of a direct tax for state purposes. During tha last mouth u great deal has boon printed regarding the reclamation work of the Government in the way of furnishings an increased wanv supply to certain Irrigated lands In Utah. It has been made plain to the people that Government limits am ready to be used where it shall appear that larga areas of land are to be benefited and the ownsra thereof are willing to repay the rixt of the addition-wate- r aupply. One particular section in Utah seems ia a fair way to secure the aid of the Government iu providing an abuudant supply of .water for Irrigation purposes. The minds of tba tanners iu Sait Lake valley are taken up with tha Idea of e ration with the Government to develop the Utah take proposition and to thus give ample water supply for all lauds iu the valley depending upon the Jordan river. Other localities are cited where Governmental aid may be Invoked to tore up waters that now go to waste. It is all commendable and will ultimately add wanderfully to tho land values In Utah. Uut there la a nothor question of almost. If not quits, equal ImiiorUnce of that confronts all tbs farmers Utah, not only In tba Salt Lake valley, but In every valley la this State where irrigation la practiced. Especially In the older valleys, where land values are naturally highest, tha question of drainage to remove seepage water and the accumulation of alkali ia of aa great importance as tko problem of getting mure water for the Lako county, land. Right In Salt where untold benefits are expected to follow the completion of the Governmental reservoir, there is today aa and much land ruined by seepage alkali ae there la land suffering for more water. In Davis, Weber, and Cache counties a very great per cent of the valley landa are rendered practically useless from lack of drainage. It ia not our purpose to discuss In detail at this time the practical workings and benefits that accrue to Irrigated land from proper drainage. We Imply wish to call attention to the fact that something more than irrigation la needed in ail the older settled valleys la Utah, and to go upun record most unequivocally la favor of reclaiming the waste lands by drainage.
