" Fast mall , --Los special to the Deseret XVvn from Vernal says: That Vernal will have a railroad within the next twelve months is one of the probabilities of this section of the state. From time to time there have been rumor, that the Uintah railroad would be extended to Venial, and over a year ago the company purchased twenty seven acre, of ground for office build lng. In the buxines, section, upon which there was erected the past summer offices, etc. AU of this ha. led to the belief that the company intended to come on In with the road sooner or later. It 1. a fact that the Uintah rail way people are ambitious to hold the business of this section of the state, and will do it if possible, as against the encroachments of the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific, better known as the Moffat road. The long period of comparative Inactivity of the latter road has had a tendency to lure the Uintah people into the belief tliat the Moffat road would never tap this section, but recent developments seem to .have aroused them to the fact that David Moffat Is very much alive and very much In earnest. From perfectly reliable authority It Is learned that the present sojourn of C. O. Baxter In the east Is In the Interest of the proioaed extensions of the Uintah road, which every Indication points to aa successful. The company's surveys contemplate extensions both to Vernal and up the Duchesne valley. These surveys, which have been approved, show a line running from Dragon, the present terminus of the road, to a point on Green river, a few miles above Ouray, where a bridge will be constructed near what Is known as the Evans bottom. After crossing the river there will be one line run north, up what la known as the Big Wash to the Uintah gap, almost due west of Vernal about five miles. From there the line follows the section lines through the Mill Ward section of the valley east to the north aide of town, and on to the company's ground. Another line goes west from the crossing of Green river to Leland and from there on up the Duchesne to Myton, and on up to Theodore, the upper government townsite on that stream. There have been rumors of late that the company la seriously contemplating going a a Jar as Heber, thus making through connections. Whether this latter rumor has any foundation or not, there ia no longer any doubt that the company expects to make the dirt fly at a lively rate the coming summer. The company has recently made a survey over the Book Cliff range, this side of Mack, for the purpose of securing a line that will eliminate the ateep grades and sharp curves of the present A . 4:00 P"m- - Angeles Llmited.2:45 pjn. well-kno- NORTH OF OGDEN. The company engineers have reported that they have succeeded in securing a line with grades that do not exceed three and one-ha- lf percent over the range. This survey contemplates a tunnel of at least 6,000 feet In length through the summit of the range. Another straw which shows the way the wind blows. Is the fact that all the surveys and Improvements along the line are for a standard-gaug- e Instead . of the present narrow-gaug- e From Dragon to Vernal and Fort Duchesne aU freight Is moved by the company In wagons on contract, which has been a losing venture, while the railway line from Mack to Dragon has paid handsomely from the start, which fact has convinced the company of the necessity of extending the railroad all the wey. From Dragon the line will follow down Evacuation creek to White river. This part of the line la the most difficult of the whole extension, as the country 1. very rough, necessitating the following down the wash the entire distance to White river. In places the way Is very crooked and some very heavy work will be encountered along the way, but from White river on there will be plain sailing with good grades. Up the Duchesne valley Is an Ideal section for railroad building ,and the work can be pushed rapidly. It la a pretty hard matter to convince the people of this section that the Rio Grande Interests are not behind the Uintah railway. The advent of the Colorado Fuel and Iron company Into the mineral fields here Is taken to mean that they have satisfactory assurances that the transportation question will not trouble them, and the close alliance between the two la taken as meaning that the Rio Grande will he on the spot to handle the business when It develops.
