Truth has accepted no money from any one for its support, save that legitimately earned, paid for subscriptions, advertising and for extra copies of the paper purchased at the regular rates from time to time, by people who were interested in special articles written and published. These articles have not always been political. Truth could have obtained money by selling out to this man Kearns, or to his agents, rather, and on more than one occasion has turned down offers of money for the entire ownership or a majority of its stock. It ought not be necessary for this paper to explain its position. But knowing that the paid whelps who will bark at it from now on until the campaign closes, will assert with all the sordid vindictiveness they possess that Truth has been contaminated by coin, we have deemed it wise to state our standing. Truth has lost money Let i . i 1 .'1 i . 4 i t . I the ever since by that firm, although the circulation of Truth is much greater than that of any weekly in the state, and greater than the combined circulations of the paid barkers who are now shouting the praises of Kearns. Truth suffered financially because of mainly other matters. Although through its efforts John S. Critchlow was elected city recorder, he has, for reasons best known to himself, seen fit to give a large share of his office patronage to papers who fought him and the ticket he was on. As a matter of fact, Truth would have been better off; its editor would have been much in pocket had it turned its back upon the right and embraced the cause of the enemies of decency in politics in this state. Truth is happy to state that the people have remained true and loyal and although the majority of them contribute only its subscription price per annum to its support, the circulation is growing and will grow. The last regular edition was over 3,500 copies, and of this we are proud. We have taken the stand we have and will stay there. Truth bought! Why,, you petty worms of the dust who are yowling about Truth being bought, you judge others by yourselves. No man is so quick to allege purchase as those who ve familiar with the seller end ef the bargain, js Lre these magpies who have started this chorus. Ask Tom Kearns if he thinks Truth has been bought. Ask any man of the crowd that is supporting him if they think Truth can be bought. Gome to the office and look over the accounts of this paper and see where it lost money, In supporting the Democratic ticket last fall, and then say Truth is bought Truth started in to unmask this fellow Kearns three years ago. It has been persistent and consistent in that work. It believes him unfit for the place he holds, and can name a hundred men in the two great parties and half as many in the Socialist party who are better fitted; better equipped money; clerks office. Two thousand a year was about the figure. The es- r w who make the statements. Truth bought! Let some one stand up. make the statement and tell us who has bought it. We have charged that Kearns and his allies have been engaged in corrupting be Country press nd tiiat fc nas secured many of them. Now tell us who has bought Truth. There is no objection to their selling their space in legitimate ways to Kearns or any other man, but when their opinions are bought, when they become his property, neck and crop, that is ve- nality. . We invite these cormorants who are hovering around the political carcass of Kearns, like turkey buzzards around carrion, to come out in the open and make their allegations. We court the utmost publicity and there will be an opportunity for some of them to make a small bit of money by showing where Truth has sold its opinions for a price. Truth is here as the representative of the people who do instead of getting it. At the time It made the light against the Kearns-Bruc- e Johnson ticket in this city it enjoyed considerable patronage from the r hard-earne- d to fill the place. It has been the only paper fighting him with energy. During all this time the papers which are now so zealously defending him; boosting him; lauding him as great; have had not a word to say pro or con about him. Suddenly, and with the unanimity of a volley fired by trained soldiers, these little papers begin printing columns of stuff about Kearns and the great friend he is to Utah and how much good he has done. From whence came this inspiration? Who furnished the alleged facts conarticle in tained in the three-colum- n the Miiford Times a few weeks ago? Who sent the Coalville Times the Black Hawk pension bill to print? Who and the furnished the Progress-RevieMurray American with the fulsome flattery they have handled? Why was good local stuff crowded out of the columns of all that this truck might be used? It ill becomes these people to allege that this little journal has been corrupted by money favors. All the known facts disprove the assertions and contradict the innuendoes of those county teemed county clerk, who was laboring under the delusion that Kearns :: was going toftnake him postmaster :: here, cut off thig source of revenue. Knowing that a. number of girls brought here to wrk in the big department store, in which Kearns has an interest, were being illegally registered, Truth exposed the scheme and for that was boycotted, and has been 1 Heber M. Wells, President. V. H. Tyree, Pros. & Gen. W. H. Cunningham, Mgr. w. S. MeCemlefc. Secretary not believe in venality in politics, and intends to continue fighting against any such condition of affairs. The Herald announces that Clark Kearns, Kerens and Keith will erect the new Herald building. Well, why not? As the syndicate owns the paper it is proper that it should construct a home for it Democrats are gradually beginning to see the shape of the Herald cat through the gunny sack in which it is confined. By the time the structure Is ready for occupation we expect to see the feline escape and let all Utah know just how the Herald is managed and in whose interests it is being run. Democrats of Montana: Tour senator, W. A. Clark, who is posing for is not doing right down in this neck of the woods. He has formed a coalition with. Tom Kearns, Dick Kerens and David Keith by which the Herald, the only hitherto Democratic organ in this state, hag been made into a paper with no policy, save and except to work in the interest of Kearns, a Republican, for the senate, and in the interests of Clark's financial ventures, all other matters having been legated to the rear. We want to Know if you Democrats up there cannot bring the old cuss to time and help ns out. If you can put an overdraw on him do so, because we need your help a whole lot Tell him he cannot be a Democrat In Montana and a Republican in Utah, etc., etc., etc. Signed, Democrats of Utah. We understand that, something of the sort will be attempted soon by the Indignant re-electi- on We join with the Deseret News in condemning this "loop the loop" business and kindred amusements in which human life is constantly endangered. There was no need for this man to lose his life at Utah-n-a park a few evenings ago. He was there to amuse a few by taking a chance on going to his death; a chance where the latter has all the best of it, and in so doing he lost Death claimed him. Such exhibitions ought to he prohibited by law, because no man has a right to do with his life as he wishes. He belongs to all of us, to a certain extent, and we have the right to demand that he stay with us and perform his part; not throw himself away that a few of the morbidly curious may have s thrilling sensation lasting for a couple of seconds. Stop this foolishness and let us have no more of it. Such exhibitions may he all right for the larger eastern cities where peoples minds become diseased, but they hare no place in a healthy, intellectual community such as is this one. If these Austrian foreigners Murray, who are supposed to know of the whereabouts of Clglch, or or whatever his name is, who fatally stabbed a Greek a few nights ago, will not give up information, it looks, to us as if drastic measures ought to be adopted.
