Show TRUT H. torial candidates, in the event the legislature is Democratic, and it looks as if the actions of the nine Republicans in the city council would make this county Democratic and the political complexion of change both houses. Former Senator Rawlins will the voters last fall, pretending to bo the marshals of the hosts of Republi- canism hero In Salt Lake, is it any wonder that the honest voter should forsako his allegiance to party and unite with tho class opposed to it? How the intelligent members of tho party, knowing the past as they must know it and having tlio ability to sco what must como in tho near future, can submit to tho dictation of Heath and his allies, receive advice at his hands and act upon it, Is a mystery. Heath stands before tho country today, although he tries hard to evade tho responsibility, as a man whose reputation is tarnished beyond cleansing. Accused of complicity in tho postal frauds, tho punishment for which he escaped only by tho kindly interference of a federal statute; forced to resign from tho exalted position of secretary of tho national committee of his party, and that, too, upon tho urgent and insistent demands of the president of tho United States, what sort of a man is ho for a party loader. Kearns stands before the people of this stato a senator charged with being elected by tho corrupt uso of money and that charge ho has never attempted to deny, because forsooth ho cannot deny it. With nothing to commend him for tho place except tho IH)sscssion of money; not a leader of men; not brilliant in any senso of the word, with no moro intelligence than any.ono of a thousand section foremen wlu) might bo selected from the operating departments of tho many railroads of the country, what sort of a man is ho to carry tho standard of Republicanism in a bitterly contested campaign. Who would believe in the purity and honesty of his intentions in tho light of past events? Who, knowing Ills history, would instinctively turn to him, hoping to find a Moses? Verily tho time is ripe for tho Republicans of Utah to purge themselves from such indigestible stuff. Yet this man and his hired importation, Heath, both want to be sent to the national convention as representatives of the puro Republicanism of tho state. Shades of all tho great men the Republican party has produced; of Sumner and of Rlainc, of Harrison and of Cameron, of John Sherman and of Matt Carpenter, of Zach Chandler and of Thad Stevens, to what extremities has tho party been reduced. As between the two there would be little difference, excepting that Judge Thurman has doubtless ' had more experience than Bagley, although this might not count against the younger candidate. William E. Rydalch is spoken of as a candidate for the position of district attorney, while Sam King is also mentioned for the place. So far as the Republicans are concerned, D. D. The colored folks up there argue that as the German element, the element, the Irish element are all recognized in the political affairs of this state, so also the Negro ought to he organized. As they are quite strong, in Ogden' and are not hampered with any Bruce Johnsons, it is no wonder if Glasmann should think the future looks dark to him. Scan-danavia- n jt jt Quil Nebeker is home from an extended visit to Mexico and has been rooting around over Cache and Rich counties since coming hack, ostensibly inspecting his hay crop, but really for the purpose of finding out how his gubernatorial boom is growing. If it is doing as well up north as it is down here and further, south there will be no trouble for Quil to land the nomination. He will find a few obstacles in Weber county, because Fred J. Kiesel has a lightning rod up and it is said that Tom Dee runs out every time he hears it thunder, but then Weber county isnt the balance of the state by any means and Nebeker has a bundle of friends in every county. jt jt place. His former distinguished services are not forgotten. He made a record as a senator and enjoyed the respect of all the senators, and was awarded the credit of being a man of rare learning and sound Judgment, especially on legal propositions. Of course his position on the Philippine question and the army was an unfortunate one to take, but no oud questioned the honesty of his indentions and the ability of the fight he put up. Then there is Colonel Sam Newhouse who, rumor says, wants to go to the senate, and will make a try for it in the event certain things happen. It is intimated strongly that Simon Bamberger would like to go, although Mr. Bamberger denies it. Besides there is former Senator Cannon, of Weber, to be reckoned with. Cannon is a brilliant man and can be1 depended upon to make a first class fight for the place. So , it will be seen that this county will get a, plenty, especially if the candidate for supreme judge should happen to come from . -- here. ' i t For state treasurer R. C, Lund of Washington county. That is one plum the south end of the: state will ask for an'd Bob would make an ideal , candidate. He is a good Democrat and a worker. He has a bushel of friends in every county in the state. He ought to get the nomination. tl ,i.(t - l Alexander Tarbet is a' candidate for the position of National Committeeman from Utah. So also Ms D. II. Peery, Jr., although the latter hasnt announced himself as yet, hpt a lot of the boys have been quietly boosting for bim and there' is liable to be a quiet little fight on for the' place. Jt jl Up to this time there has been no names mentioned for the 'Honorary ' positions of presidential elector on either ticket' But there Ms time enough, as the mari' said who got his boys up at 4:30 in the morning to go to work. It is quite likely that these places will be given to some of the rich and well born members of the party as a sort of consolation prize at, or near, the end of the convention. -- ' J - Jit Speaking of candidates for office: We are informed on authority that cannot be questioned that our esteemed friend and fellow' townsman will not be a candidate for the position of United States senator at the hands of the legislature next winter. By our esteemed friend' and fellow townsman, we mean of course. Perry S. Heath, the unfortunate gentleman who had the painful information brought to him last week that three of his dear friends had been sentenced to two years in the penitentiary for complicity in the postal frauds. Perry long ago stated that the charges against his dear friends and associates were only malicious fictions inspired by envy and hatred. It is rather (?) tough that on such a state of factssenbe should three or four of them tenced by the court to two years In the penitentiary and to pay a fine of $10,000 each. ' . Thus far in the Democratic campaign Salt Lake hasnt presented any candidate for governor and doubtless will not. In all probability Salt Lake county will get the nomination for congress in the person of Judge Powers, who is as strong a man as the party could nominate. Besides this the judge is entitled to something. He has been an ardent worker in the ranks for years and has responded to every call.
