Show t truth. HOMEWARD BOUND. the HurloHf Dnfc Hook Lightship fY&tia Off Sunfiy Special Marconlgrajitt . tatid Hol August 29 The f N ew )' Well,- - here ft ft is The senator changing shirts. ft ft l'rovo, Ituh, Aug. SH. The Republican ladies of Utah eounty were well represented at tlie opening of the elegant club rooms of the Women's Republican club today. It was, in fact, a day in women's work in politics. Steps were taken to organize clubs in all the cities of the eounty. Mrs. Fanny 13. Stewart will no doubt act as organizer. She is uu eloquent talker and has a Republican record dating back before the war. In the early inception of national parties in this state, she was a forceful speaker in the campaigns. Rack of the work in this city, Mrs. Emily (J. Clnff, the president of the club, Mrs. Reed Smoot and Mrs. C. E. Loose have stood with financial aid and encouragement. The hard workers in the club aro a little too nutnerous to mention. An elegant banquet was served the visitors, at which Mrs. James Clove presided as toastmaster, and toasts were responded to by Judge Booth, Mrs. Stewart, idr, Reed Smoot, Mrs. M. A. Taylor of Lelii, Mr. II. l'yne, and Mrs. M. C. R. Mendenhall of Springville. In the afternoon a public meeting, or rally, was held, at which Mrs. Cluff, the president, spoke words of welcome, which were responded to by Mrs. Taylor of Lehi. Mrs. Cooper of Springville urged the womens claim to oflice, and remarks were made on the neceisity of club organization by Mr. James Clove; on issues of the day by Booth and Mr. Eph. Homer, and Judge on local issues by Mr. Reed Smoot. The latter gentleman referred to the announcement cf his candidacy for United States senator before a former meeting of the club. It iiad been said that the announcement was a mistake, but Mr. Smoot thought otherwise. He desired to win fairly and with no favors from church influences, as Democrats were charging, and was in the fight in no secret manner. He simply desired sue- cess as a Republican at tlie hands of Republicans. Should he have deferred his announcement until after the campaign, and then been elected, church influence would have been charged in his favor, and many would have believed it. Speaking of the state convention, lie urged thatcoining it be made strictly and solely a Republican convention. He did not ask that it be Smoot convention, would fight it becoming either a Kearns or against Sutherland convention. Let it he made a Republican convention and as such give the administration at Washington the warmest endorsement.
