Sitting alone in my bachelor apartments, 1 was gazing into the fire and cynically reflecting on the uselessness of it all, when I heard strains of music slft-n- g through from the apartments immediately below. An ardent Pianola player myself, my attention was immediately riveted. Pianolists, like artists in other lines, are likely to be very positive. Positive that the other fellow is a chump, f he ventures to disagree with them, and positive that they themselves mow pretty much all there is to know about music as interpreted by the Pianola. Therefore, in this spirit of I prepared myself to listen and criticise. My neighbor, a a new comer, whose acquaintance 1 pad not yet made, amused me with pretty but trivial selections from Liszt, Rubinstein, Schuman, etc. lie apparently had not had much practice on the Pianola. II is touch was unsympathetic and his attack weak and hesitat- perience self-satisfact- ion, ing. In a way, Pianola enthusiasts are very fraternal, and are over eager to show one another how to play. At least that is the theory. I supsose if the truth were known, this anxiety to impart information is an indication of keen appreciation of their own ability coupled with a desire to show off. At any rate, after listening for an hour or so, I packed half a dozen of my best selections under my arm, went down stairs and rang the gentlemans bell. As he ushered me into the parlor, I looked to see if his Pianola was of the latest model, and to my astonishment I saw no Pianola. A handsome baby grand piano stood open in one corner of the room, but no Pianola. After introducing myself, and telling my errand, I asked Mr. B where his Pianola was and was much chagriaed at his replping rather severely that he had no Pianola. He was only a digital pianist! And here I had been wasting my time listening to so faulty a piano player as the human fingers, a method of playing the (iano so limited in repertoire and so hampered by difficult technique as to make the result almost void of expression, except in a few cases of rare It was rather an ungracious act for the bar association to invite the judges of the Supreme court to its meetings and then give them Hail Columbia. It was done a year ago and was repeated a couple of weeks ago. Some of the members of the association denounce the action of the lawyers who roasted the occupants of the Supreme bench at the time when they were the invited guests of the association. There is a difference of opinion also as to the justice of the strictures of Mr. Varian and a strong feeling that any grievance he may have had was greatly magnified. It is however a quarrel among lawyers from which the public got considerable amusement, . ft ft of county assessors has meeting been arranged for Wednesday next, in the City and County Building for the purpose of comparing systems and an interchange of ideas among those officials. It is expected about 20 counties will be represented. The State Board of Equalization lias declared that the office of the county assessor of this county is the best conducted in the state, and Ex State Treasurer Chipman is authority for the statement, thut it has been better conducted and the records more accurately kept during the past year than ever before in this county. Quite a compliment to Assessor Eldredge and his assistants. ft ft The lecture given in the Salt Lake theatre on Thursday afternoon by Frederick Warde, under the auspices of the Salt Lake City Press club was one of the greatest literary treats the Salt Lake public has ever enjoyed. The subject, The Women of Shakespeare, is very attractive and when handled by one of the very foremost exponents of the greatest dramatist of the world, became doubly so. The large audience thoroughly appreciated the great actor and his handling of the subject The Press club feels highly the compliment conferred upon it by Mr. Warde. Several years ago Mr. Warde gave a similar entertainment under the auspices of the Press club which was equally enjoyable. . A genius. had been traveling abroad years on pleasure bent. Music being a hobby of his, he had studied the piano in some of the best conservatories of Europe, and under n masters. He had just arrived in this country, and had not heard the Pianola. I dragged him up to my rooms and introduced him to my instrument. When he had exhausted his wonderment, had played the Pianola to his hearts content, and after we had played and discussed all the music in my cabinet, we were as- !j tonished to find the dawn creeping in at the windows and putting out the lights of the great city. Next day Mr. B purchased a Pianola and is now as great an enthusiast as anybody. I hear no faulty and music from below, expressionless whereat I constantly praise the name of the man who invented the Pianola. The enthusiasm among Pianola owners is certainly remarkable, and is, perhaps, the strongest indication of the pleasure derived from these instruMr. B for several well-know- TIME TABLE.
