Show TRUTH 8 Oil Development in Utah. There has not been much new to chronicle in the oil situation this week. Development work on the various properites Is going forward steadily and the good indications continue to be most encouraging. Everything looks as if we were on the eve of great in things, and those who have invested oil claims and made locations will, from present appearances, reap a rich harvest in the not vey distant future. The apparatus for distilling the gas that is connected with the present experimental retort is not of sufficient capacity to handle the great volume that is thrown off from the shale. Not more than 10 per cent of it is condensed, and when a match is applied to the gas flowing from the pipe, after having passed through the condenser, it would throw a flame two or three feet from the mouth of the pipe. Since this experiment everyone is positive we are going to have an oil boom. Some of those wrho were the most skeptical about the proposition H. M. Frank Emery has announced himself as a candidate on the Republican ticket for the office of Sheriff next fall. Mr. Emery is starting out early. There is no doubt he would make a good officer. The Democrats will probably honor Sheriff Naylor with a renomination, although Mr. Naylor will have a fight on his hands to get it, as it is underHowells is laying his stood plans to capture the prize. Air. Howells was very sore at not getting the renomination at the time that Naylor carried it off, and is determined to try again. He will have quite a large folex-Sher- iff lowing. John M. Whitaker, clerk of the Board of Public Works, is again a candidate for the office of County Clerk. Last time when he sought the office he was undecided whether he would go before the Republican or Democratic conventions, but finally made up his mind to be a Republican, and it is understood he has not changed since. Any one coming before the Republican convention in opposition to County Clerk John James will, however, have a hard time. Air. James has proved himself to be an excellent official and he is certainly entitled to a second term. He pays close attention to his office and unlike the former County Clerk may be found at his post every day. There are no cobwebs on his desk. The office has not been so well and efficiently conducted for many years as it has been since Mr. James put on the harness. 4- - T. A. Reamer is out for the appointment of City Sealer of Weights and Aleasures. The present Incumbent of the office is P. A. Nebeker, and if a change is to be made when the new administration comes in no more capable man could be found than Air. Reamer. His friends are working for his appointment and in case of the retirement of Air. Nebeker his chances for securing the place are good.
