Show Tk the Political Arena. IN THE POLITICAL ARENA. FOURTH PRECINCT. The county committees of the two parties have met and fixed the dates for holding their primaries and city and precinct conventions. The Democratic convention will be held in the Salt Lake Theater on October 2nd, beginning at 10:30 a. m. for the purpose of nominating candidates for city offices. The convention will be composed of 554 members apporWill the Democrats of this city ever tioned as follows: learn anything? Two years ago when FIRST PRECINCT. they had everything their own way, if they had only displayed a little bit of judgment, they allowed Arthur Barnes, one of the best fellows on earth, by the way, to be nominated for Mayor, when there was not one man of judgment in the party who believed that Barnes had the slightest show of election. The men who could have prevented the nomination of Barnes, and didnt do it, explained later that to have compelled him to withdraw from the race would have caused a split and much in the party. And right here, Truth wants to ask the Democrats one question: Which would have been for the best Interests of the party, to have sidetracked Barnes and won, or to have let him go on, as was done, and lead the party to defeat? Had a good, clean, Gentile candidate for Mayor been nominated at that time, under the peculiar conditions that existed, he couldnt have been kept out of the Mayors chair with a club. But Barness friends, who didnt know anything about politics, and cared less, except for the jobs that they hoped to corral, insisted upon his nomination, and the party leaders were too cowardly to step in and do their duty by the organization. The result is a matter of history. . ill-feeli- ng non-fanatic- al ' Right here it might be well to state that if there ever was a party or organization that was in dire need of a good healthy boss, the Democracy of The Democrats will hold their precinct conventions for the nomination of fifteen candidates for the City Council from the five city precincts on the evening of October 4th and the primaries to select delegatee to the convention in the theater will be held on Monday evening, September 30th in each of the fifty-tw- o voting districts of the city. The Republican city convention will be held in the Salt Lake Theater on Monday, October 14th, commencing at 11 a. m. The primaries will be held on October 7th, and the precinct Monday conventions on Thursday evening, October 10th. The apportionment of delegates was fixed on the basis of one delegate for each twenty votes or major fraction thereof cast last November for Heber M. Wells for Governor, making a total of 492 delegates in the convention: FIRST PRECINCT. . No. of No. of this city fills the bill. In the old days Judge O. W. Powers and David C. Dunbar filled those important positions, and filled them well. But as time went on the ward politicians, the fellows who can't to save their lives look beyond a petty Job, began to howl. "We dont want any bosses," they said, and it was not a great while until Powers and Dunbar were out. And what has been the result? Defeat after defeat, with absolutely no reason for it except that the partys affairs were in the hands of men who knew nothing about political manipulation. Take the Barnes campaign as an example. When Fred Leonard and George A. Whitaker were sitd up in the old Wonderting land building and stuffing reporters with extravagant estimates, there was not one member of the party who had any idea of the partys strength in any voting district of the city. cross-legge- Now, some distinguished Democrat may rise up right at this point, and ask what business it is of this journal whether the Democrats do the proper thing or not. The answer is this: From a strictly partisan standpoint Truth doesnt care whether either party ever wins an election or not. for this is an . 1 Total .... .......
