Show The Paper That Dares To Take By ROBERT M. BARTELL WASHINGTON, D.C. (Liberty Lobby News Service) During July, 1974, New York City. Comptroller Harrison Goldin sent a telegram to then President Nixon advising that, a condition of near panic .exists in the money market. Request immediate emergency measures to provide relief." Nixon turned Goldin down. Today, Mayor Abraham Beame is holding out the begging bowl to the federal govern- ment,; the banks, or anyone who will listen. An April 23, 1975, article in the New York Daily News reveals the fantastic story of how 12,000-plu-s unemployed New Yorkers collect about $840 thousand a week in jobless benefits . . . while' enjoying the sun and surf on Florida beaches. Of course, this isnt the sole reason the largest city in the U.S. is broke, but it dramatically illustrates how residents of NYC have come to expect that government at any level is responsible for their economic welfare. New York City can hardly be blamed for paralleling what the federal government ' is doing in Washington. money Namely, spending they dont have. Now, June 26, 1975 The Utah Independent Page 5 Stand The similarities between New Yorks fiscal problems and those of the federal government made President Fords words seem hypocritical when he turned down Mayor Beames request for a $ 1.5 billion bail-ouFord said, Every family which makes up a. budget has to make painful choices. As we make these choices at home, so must we also make welfare-oriente- d cities are paying the price. Worried mayors in other American cities experiencing similar financial woes are watching New York City very carefully. If the federal government eventually bails out New York, which is highly probable, their worries will be over. If Congress refuses to help, Americas largest cities fear race riots and looting. DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE 1776 Four specific references to the dependence of our nation on God: ...the laws of Nature and of Nature's God..." ...that all men are created them in public office. We must stop promising more and more services without knowing how we will cover their costs. This is the same President who presented a federal budget to Congress including a $60 billion deficit. The essential difference between what has happened in New York City and what is happening in Washington is that in Washington, the government can turn on the printing presses and bail out the Treasury and the fiscal excesses of the legislature. In New York, City Hall must go to the banks and the investors. Understandably, the bankers are not going to purchase New York City bonds. Their attitude is that the federal government is mainly responsible for New Yorks problems, because the federal government prints billions of dollars to cover its deficits, . thus debasing the currency of the entire nation. It appears a solution involving the same method used by the federal government would be perfect for New York. Simply crate up the currency printing plates used in Washington . . . and ship them to New York City. After they have printed all the money they need to pay their bills, all tne rest of the American cities can in turn use the plates. That makes exactly as much sense as whats happening in Washington. My original bill was H.R.6I07 and 'the bill reported by the Commerce committee is H.R.6844.
