They .have must be supported by moneyed men, otherwise they are lost, as it is usually termed. If they had learned less and had acquired a knowledge to operate with simple tools and apparatus, instead of with millionaire outfits, they could help in developing our immense natural resources, and mutual benefit would be the result. We have in our midst an institute where prospectors, miners, graduates, etc., can acquire a sufficient practical and theoretical knowledge in mining, metallurgy, chemistry and electricity to be capable of earning a livelihood. The Mining Academy has never asked for Legislative or other support than that of its students, and yet it has graduated 210 students, of whom 175 earn a livelihood by their profession. Prof. H. Hirsching, the head of the academy, who is an old miner and practical chemist and metallurgist, and a graduate of two universities, has been devoting his time to this grand education of successful men for a period of nearly twelve years in this city, and proposes to continue until his system of academic teaching will be universally adopted. He has at the academy a complete laboratory to carry on assaying, chemical analysis, electrolysis and lixiviation. All processes can be studied, theoretically and practically, and the legislators should visit the establishment in order to get an idea of a mining academy conducted on an economic and successful basis. If an institute deserves patronage, Prof. H. Hirschings mining academy is it, as it does more for the development of our natural resources than any other institute on the whole continent. An advance in the price of copper, cent, and increased shipreaching ment of copper ores were the only noteworthy features of the week. The bulk of these copper-bearin- g ores come from the Tintic mines, the Ajax, Mammoth. Caresa and others. One lot of twenty-fou- r tons of Caresa ore, carrying 42 per cent copper, was bought by Agent Jackson of the Consolidated Kansas City company. The advance in the price of the red metal is a matter of considerable importance to these Tin-ti- c producers. Ore receipts continue in unchanged volume. Lead ores still command a high figure, while there is an abundance of all others to supply present wants. The local smelters do not look with favor upon the bill introduced by Representative Snedaker, making it unlawful to operate smelting works without a device which will prevent the escape of poisonous matter in the smoke. If any such device were in existence, legislation would be unnecessary, as the smelters would be only to glad to avail themselves of its use and thus save the values that now escape with the fumes.
