Maltman based his declaration on the fact that the world has no other metal to replace gold as a backing for national currencies, and the additional fact international exchange absolutely must recognize some medium for exchange purposes. Price Seems High At casual glance most individuals may assume that Maltmans ultimate figure is high; wed say so, too,. But when the job of reconstructing a demoralized world is undertaken at the close of the war, some medium of exchange must be available, and gold is the only medium extant. It will require a tremendous amount of international credit and this credit necessarily must be based on some tangible substance, value of which is universal. Gold is the only possible . solution, and h today there is not enough gold represented by the present .value of $35 an ounce to cove the needs of a world under reconstruction. Situation in Canada It hits been known for some time that .speculators are buying up gold in Canada. Canadian authorities - permit the free sale and exchange of gold and .it is not worth a mans life and liberty in Canada to be caught with a half dozen gold coins in his possession. The gold mines of Canada are exerting every effort to produce gold and the producer thereof is privileged to sell it or dispose of it as he sees fit. Speculators take no risk in buying ud gold in Canada for it is a definite conclusion that the price of this metal will never decline so long as world, commerce exists. If the price goes up at the close of the war and it is a foregone conclusion that it will the speculators will make a handsome profit. Making Fetish of Gold In the United States, the government is making a fetish of gold and at the same time, conversely, doing nothing toward expanding 'or even encouraging gold production. But the holder of gold mining stocks will do well to put his certificates away and see that they are not lost or stolen. It is said, too, that a movement, is now under way and steadily gaining momentum toward the accumulation of sound gold mining stocks by Investors who are foresighted enough to realize that gold mining after the close of the war is certain to. be an exceedingly profitable industry. Can Wipe Out Debts By advancing the price of gold, the United States can wipe out its war debt if the advance is substantial enough. Certain bank-- , ing and financial interests would likely put up a vigorous protest as has always been the case in past advances in gold prices. Inasmuch as there is not near enough gold in the world to finance its rebuilding, about' the only way the gold supply can be stretched to meet future demands is to jack up the price.' But gold at $140 an ounce! Boost it to half this price and western mining states, with Nevada second to California, will see a revival of them good old Wee-pa- h days when orange and hot dog stands lined the desert roads for miles.
