The Tooele City Volunteer Fire Department is making an appeal to the citizens and taxpayers of Tooele City for contributions with which to purchase an electric fire alarm siren at a total cost ot nearly $750.00. The Fire Department first asked the City Council to purchase the siren but the Council did not have enough funds at its disposal to make the purchase. The Department then sent out letters to the taxpayers asking them to contribute of one per cent of the assessed valuation of their property toward the purchase of the siren. Quite a number of those receiving the letters made a ready response to the appeal, and nearly of the amount required has been received. At the meeting of the Fire Department last week a committee was appointed to interview personally those who failed to respond to the letters to explain to them riie advantages of having a siren to give a fire alarm, With the present alarm when a fire is discovered in the outlying parts of the city the telephone operator generally has to be called up and then she has to call aperson in the vicinity of the City Hr.ll give the alarm, often taking several minutes to rouse some one 1'jv that purpose. With the siren the operator can turn on the alarm in a moment, thereby summoning the Fire Department without delay, which is obviously the best and in the long run, the cheapest way, as delay in reaching a fire entails the greatest loss. The installation of an adequate fire alarm system is a paying investment to the property owners of .Tooele, as at present the insurance rates prevailing here are almost the maximum adopted by the Underwriters Association. With a well equipped and an efficient Fire Department, a demand can then be made consistently to havJ7ftate. lowered, which wild bw. ttft property owner This fa1 only one phase of adequate fire protection. Yet the term Middle Class or its equivalent' has come into disrepute among certain classes in some countries on the earth and it is surprising that the places where this class is looked on with disfavor, are growing. In England, it is said that it is no longer respectable to be a sturdy Middle Class man; in Russia the men of this class are being hunted like wild beasts,' and are being reduced to the lowest servitude. The Middle Class men are said to have fled from Budapest and Vienna, while in Berlin thtey are openly threatened with extinction. Even in this country the Middle Class men are being looked upon as oppressors and their place is being taken by the proletariat, who are less intelligent, less industrious, less useful, and less worthy to rule the country. At present the middle class has the majority, and the power to guide the country through the political storm which seems to be threatening its very existence, but they seem to be afraid to use that power and are compromising with the enemies of that power because they are cowardly. In times like the presentlt behooves every man to consider what this power means to him and to see that he makes right use of it. , There is a prenicious class which has nothing but is attempting to grab something should the chance to do so come. The principles under which the government is being conducted has stood the test of years, and to try a new untried experiment In governmental operation may mean a return to the doctrine of the Survival of the fittest.
