Utali Suturdnyx at Mtilvali', MESSENGER. U. S. M. C. Iniwr. at the poatofflce at Midvale, STATJj'.ASSOClATlQN Ask ten men to tell you the cause of the high cost of living. Ten chances to one, you will receive ten different answers, all of which are wrong, fundamentally. Certainly, the answers might contain some troth. They might be relatively right, and, in a way, portray correctly the effects of certain causes, local, national But almost invariably, when reasons" for the and world-widhigh cost of living are given, the reasons are based upon premises either manufactured for the occasion or utilized on account of their general acceptance by persons with business, political or religious axes to grind. The little word if, stands 'for it is so" in the mind of the average person, and consequently unhealthy lies are continually being dressed up in a sort of selfish garb and forced to journey through the world just as though they were necessary, wholesome truths. Republican leader, Mondell, says the Democratic party, is the cause of the high cost of living; and Champ Clark lays the cause at the door of the G. 0. P. Of course, these two politicians are simply reasoning in lighter vein, when they make such asseiv tions. But the mere fact that they permit themselves to joke" in' this particular manner evidences the existence of a popular premise which is being taken altogether too seriously by the masses. Moreover ,the high cost of living isnt a child of the peace treaty or of inflation of the currency or of cold storage or of the packers or of the wholesalers or of the retailers or of any of the thousand and one other breeders of strife and contention at the present time. Hi cpst was born before any of them were thought of and, apparently ,it will be the sorry subject of dis-quieting argument long after they have been satisfactorily controlled." Hi cost was cradled thousands of years ago, dnd it was lulled into the first stages of evolution by 'parents who had learned to look with an envious eye upon the worldly possessions of a neighbor. It functioned in that world of hide and hair and homliness that revolved before the dollar was born. And it functions the more disastrously as time goes on. Every child being brought into the world today is paternally guided along the paths which lead to his certain acquisition of those attributes which reflect hi cost on every hand. For, verily, the clink of coin is always so manifestly important to all that the clink of his first nickels fill the child brain with visions of wealth and power. Hi cost is a worthy tribute to the aims and aspirations of man; for its ever increasing vigor bespeaks mans success in his striving for the attainment of his highest ideal. Hi cost proves that man is efficient that the human races are progressing in that particular field of endeavor in which they have always chosen to apply themselves. For if material wealth really has a value sufficiently great to make of it the substance of mans highest ideal, the value of that ideal must also increase, else progress ceases. Indeed, the high cost of living is a worthy tribute .to the aims and aspirations of man. But what of those aims and aspirations to which the world-wid- e curse is a worthy tribute? And how can the world live a solution of the disgraceful problem? Socrates said that thinking would free the world. But, thus far, the statement has proved itself to be a lie; for who is there who does not think? Who is there who-caeven refrain from thinking? Of course, Socrates referred to right thinking. But where is the judge? Christ had a fine idea, for instance, but he died young and look at most of his followers! But even if we all are ignorant of the best solution of the hi cost problem, we should all know enough to steer clear of those fakirs who are today attempting to lead the world into a veritable holocaust of ease and contentment, by the singular process of leveling humanity by the process of dividing the spoils of what they are pleased to term a vicious system. The philosophy of the average leveler of humanity, of the average reformer who is going to erase hi cost from the calendar, is essentially wrong. Where consciousness is, individuality must be at liberty to work out its own salvation; and until a new and more wholesome system of individual expression can be conceived, it would be the height of folly, indeed, for humanity to take chances on something which still clings to the mammon feature of our present systems, but which processes, in some manner or other, the power of legislating higher ideals into the minds of e. n men. When the United States entered tifrwsr it war considered an expression of patriotism to wear a tin American flag. The finest expression of patriotism one could display now would be the wearing of a tiny Thrift flag; if such an emblem were obtainable, to indicate an understanding of, loyalty to and service for oni country in peace time. Instead of a war with other countries the United States now has before it the tremendous struggle with the tendency to drift back to its prewar habits ,af careless' spending and general waste. Perhaps no country in the world had indulged before the war in such reckless expenditure ai the United States. Perhaps no country in the world had been endowed with such lavish resources. The steady demand from our associates in the war and the heavy demands on transportation made saving necessary to husband those resources to meet the needs of the world. If we axe to continue a leading nation in the future as in the past we have no choice to whether we shall save or not Lord Rosebery, the great English statesman, has assured us that Thrift is the surest end strongest foundation of an empire so sure, so strong, so necessary that no nation can long exist that disregards More recently President Wilson has said: Economy and everything which ministers to economy supplies the foundations of national lib. We have not studied cost or economy as we should, either as organisers of industry, as statesmen or as individuals. The amazing recovery of France from the Franco-Pnuaia- n war. it attributed to the personal habita of economy of the French people. They never allow the least commodity to be mianaed which can be converted into money, and the money in torn into the much-covet- ed induatrial or aervice securities floated public by the great banking corporations of France. It is estimated that with a population of a little over forty million people, there are twenty-thre- e million savings accounts in France. In reality they save first and spend afterward. The enormoiu individual saving which can be effected simply by paying careful attention not to allow any waste to creep in was demonstrated amply during the war. But our success then muat not be allowed through negligence to change into failure now. For it is through individual thrift The J. C. Penney Co. INCORPORATED u MIDVALE, UTAH it I. Lester Ice Co.
