EXTREME RADICALISM We hear much talk about radicalism and they are thinking of making laws against it. But the truth la that away back In 1776 there was uttered, adopted and published one of the most radical documents that ever emanated from the mind and hands of men. Here is part of It. Read it and think about It. Do you know of any radicalism that is more extreme than this: tha men are We hold these truths to be created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain Inalienable Rights, that among these are T.ifu, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights. Governments are lnHuted among men, deriving their Just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any form of Government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the Right of the people to alter or to abolish It, and to Institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organising Its powers In such form as to them shall seem moat likely to effect their Safety and Happiness From the Declaration of Independence. self-evide- PAYING THE PYPER THE TRUE MEASURE One of the most Interesting developments of - these unusually interesting days la the return of barter as a means of satisfying human needs for which ready money is unavoidable. Many Isolated Instances of resort . to this primitive method have been reported but Its most striking exemplification Is to be found In a group of western states. It began In the autumn of 1981, In Utah, where a handful of businessmen temporarily without a business set themselves to work out a plan whereby idle labor in Balt Lake City could be exchanged for the products of Utah farms. The response exceeded all expectations, and presently similar exchanges for goods and servloe were being arranged among urban groups. Workers who had toiled on farms and had been paid in vegetables, fruit and grain, swapped their surplus for haircuts, dental care or medical attention. The movement spread to Idaho. In January ast year, it was organised as the Natural Development Association, with headquarters in Balt Lake City, and branches In Idaho, Wyoming and Arizona. To facilitate the process of barter, It has devised a form of scrip, representing tha value of product of service which the holder exchanges for it. It is then exchangeable for whatever product or When thus service of equal value the holder desires. onoe exchanged it la destroyed. It cannot be hoarded or monopolized or used to earn interest. Here Is a matter for thoughtful study. H. H. WINDSOR, Jr. Special AND HOW! Excerpt from The World Tomorrow The last war cost the United States $51,000,000,000 As recently as 1885, $51,000,000,000 would have bought tha whole United States, with everybody and everything In It, lock, stock and barrel. Today, $51,000,000,000 would buy- 16 states like with Alabama, or three enormously rich' Caiforalas, a couple of Colorado thrown in for good measure. It would buy the entire state of New York including the metropolis, wonder city of the would and there still would be left over enough change- - to acquire four states like Maryland. If you had started throwing away dollars the day Christ was born, and kept lt.up ever since at the rate of a dollar a minute without pausing either to eat or sleep, you would only now be starting on your second bSlion, with 95,000 years more to go. At live per cent, $51,000,000,000 would provide an annual income of $2,550,000,000, or enough to pension 2,125,000 old and broken-dow- n workers at $100 a month, virtually aboUshing poverty in this eountry. That la what the WoiOd War has cost you to date, and the end is not yet. Former President Coolldge estimates the total cost will be more than $100,000,000,-00- 0, or about the present value of al the states west of the Mississippi. The ransom of an empire burned up In battle. William Philip Simms, quoted from THE NEW YORK TELEGRAM. - Until April 1 Caslk The Progressive Independent VOICE OF THE HOUR Tell me When will peace be back among men, , And liberty no longer be a myth, And justice break the bread of plenty At humanitys repast? A. we are often asked, What can you expect? To say the least, we expect something different. We would like to have men interest themselves In something better, something more dignified than the wild fw wealth. We would like them to choose a high aim, not for a day or a year, but for a life time. And then keep faith with themselves. Not to profess this today and that tomorrow and so easily reason themselves out of both on tha morrow when it la convenient Take a good look Into yourselves and see If you do not love your kind and tbelr welfare more than you do material wealth. Then say so and stand by it Preach the high faith or do not . preach at all. Do not aay you would like to see a new social order when you are unwilling to leave an arm chair to help bring It about Choose liberty and strength of foul the brotherhood of man, and work to that end, and through the struggle your strength will grow and your idea will be gut over through cooperation with your fellows of a kindred faith. for INDEPENDENT ORGANIZING AN N.D.A.
