Show DAILY UTAH STATE JOURNAL OGDEN, UTAH. FRANK J. CANNON, EDITOR. THE SHORT LINE MANIPULATION. Is it practical? Or is it merely stock jobwell bing? These are questions which may in the be asked concerning the recent changes Line railjurisdiction of the Oregon Short ideas appear way officials. Some suggestive of the Oregon behalf in the petition made in n Short Line railway company and Messrs. and Pierce for the distribution of the assets of the Northern Securities company known as the merger, recently declared to be illegal by the supreme court of the United States. The Oregon Short Line company of may be desirous of showing itself to be greater magnitude than its original mileage, in order to impress the courts with the idea that it is entitled to a larger share of the assets than it would otherwise receive. Railin way manipulation has become so occult these days that one ventures even a reasonable opinion with some hesitancy; but the utter from the viewpoint of practical absurdity railway men, of the change in jurisdiction compels people to look elsewhere for a guiding motive. Such may be found in the purposes of Harriman and Pierce and others to gain a vantage point in the courts and in the stock market. Meantime Ogden may rest her soul in peace. The railway situation, as a fact, grows better and better for this city every year. Nothing can disturb Ogden as the chief railway center of the intermountain country. Let the stock jobbing and the manipulation of legal and illegal technicalities continue. Ogden is no galled jade, and her withers are unwrung. Har-rima- t. PARKER AS A CANDIDATE. A New Yorker has an fnteresting letter on another page on the candidacy of Hon. Alton B. Parker of New York, for the Democratic nomination to the presidency. The letter is worth reading. It sets the facts of Mr. Parker's career plainly before the public. With one part of ' the letter this paper desires to express unmistakable agreement; and that is with regard to Judge Parkers straight Democracy in the Bryan years. So far as has been indicated, neither Mr. Bryan himself nor any one of those who may be classed as devoted followers of that great man, has ever indicated any factional opposition to Judge Parker. On the contrary many of the leading men of the country who were called Bryanites before the Get Together doctrine was preached and practiced, are now out in declared favor of the nomination of Alton B. Parker. This paper has no candidate at this time, believing that the covention unrestrained should-settlthis great question in the interest of Democracy and the people of the United States;' but it must not forego the duty of pronouncing Judge Parker to be an acceptable candidate.- - He stands in that rank of men from whom the Demecratic party should make and doubtless will make its selection, and if the choice shall fall upon him there is no reason why any Democrat in the United States should withhold his franchise from Alton Bk e Parker. JUDGE POWERS AND CONGRESS. Salt Lake Truth, which is never neutra! and sometimes independent, declares that there is a strong sentiment in favor of the nominatitn of Hon. Orlando W. Powers for congress on the Democratic ticket this fall. Truth does not put this idea forward as : new discovery. Certainly it is not a nove thought to'the unterrified of this state. Judge Powers has never lost his place as a favored leader of Democracy. There has not been an hour when Democrats generally were not willing to turn to him as a candidate for the senate or house of representatives or any other honor within the gift of the state. In 1902 it was thought that he would assuredly be the nominee of his party; bnt the selection Hon. of the Howell Joseph by the Republican convention caused some of the ' closest friends of Judge Powers to think that that it was not an available time for him. Judge Powers himself took this view; and, believing that Democratic success was of more importance than the personality of the candidates, he nominated Hon. William II. 'King in a speech which was characterized by such such grace and eloquence UTAH STATE JOURNAL, MONDAY APRIL 4, Mfc and devotion to party as added to the endearment which Democrats already entertained for him. It is well known to those most intimate with to Judge Powers that he has a disinclination enter into controversy at this time for political office. His reputation would scarcely receive anv accession by an election to congress, for ic is already a national figure in his party; jut something must be said to him by the Democrats of Utah, who, this year will have a right and the greatest need to nominate their most eligible men with the assurance that personal predilection shall be set aside and every man so selected shall accept his candidacy. In this view Judge Powers stands forth as he most available and eminent nominee 'for congress. He is known to every Democrat in the state. He would make a campaign of such brilliancy as to attract to the Demecratic manner all party adherents and thousands of other voters. When elected he would easily march into the inner circle of congeessmen at Washington. He has such ability as a lawyer, such acumen as a political statesman; and such entrancing qualifiations as a wit and orator as that the house would not be long without a realization that another Proctor tnott had arrived in the halls of national egislation. This paper is not authorized to place the name of Judge Powers in nomination; but1 it las the right to pay this tribute to his eminence as a Democrat, and to his qualifications or the high .office of representative in congress. If he shall be nominated and that may and will occur if he does not discourage he wlil be a tower of ihe movement strength to his party in the state and nation.
