Show its THE LOG AT LOGftN, UTAH, FRIDAY ttORt VOL. 3. EXPLANATION MORE- - Councilman How it Carlisle Tells Happened. ANSWERS A LABORERS QUERY r. Carlisle Not in Favor of Faying $2. for Labor When It Can be Got at a Lower Figure.' TT-TB- ! ..aulllbUll rioa. Id Jour lnune of October 6th, a correspondent signing himself A Lalxiror puts the following quest ion: TO COUNCILMAN CADLIBLE. The laboring men of Logan wish to know if you are in favor of inking from hundreds of laboring men's wages, who, with tlieir families, are depending niton their daily toil for a mere subsistence, the sum of $1,890 and appropriating said amount o twelve who, with their families, are in moderate fiuaneirl circumollioo-hoider- es stances, yourself included? If the writer of the foregoing quistiim intended to eouvey the idea that I have in my past official record, or that I would in the future favor bo great a wrong as the one intimated in his question he is guilty of a slander. 1 am no in fav r of paying $9.00 a day for lultor when large numbers of men in our community can be had for $1.50 a day and when employment cannot be given to all the men ol the city who are in need of work. Is this taking from labuiing men's wages to give to officials? I seconded a motion to increase the salary of the Mayor in order to emphasise the inconsistency oi lowering his salary whileUeTug" extravagant with funds used for other purposes. While I did this witiiout having gien the subject any previous consideration and merely in order to call the attention of the majority to their own inconsistency; yet if the question wore to come up now as to whether the Mayor of Logan should be paid mure than the cheapest of any of all the city's hired laborers, namely, $2.00 a day, I would be inclined to tho opiniou Uiat th man who hlledtlie responsible office of mayor and who was undertaking to discharge the duties f tho office properly would bo entitled to more compensation than the man working on the street Is it taking from the laboring men's wuges to hold the opinion that the Mayor of this leading citv should be of such ability as to command more wages than a man working on the street? of salaries I conThe qu sider in the same manner as tlmt of wugcB; namely, to give to each what would be right according to my judgement in the expenditure reof public luuds for value ceived. If iiiue has demonstrated that the se vices of the chief officer of our city have nut been worLh more to the people of I lit city than a similar sum expended on our streets ut the rate of $2.00 a day for eight hours rork, then 1 most confess tlmt I would in regard to any increase ol the May ot's salary. Would it be taking from hundreds of lulioriiig men's wages if lal-orin- - to-b- we slioul I decide to pay the Mayor more than $2.00 per day for his services? should clearly A Laborer understand that I haro not favored paying to laboring men who worked for the city Icsh wages than they could gel elsewhere for siinilur work. I have not endeavored o reduce their wages under what the former city administration paid. The mujoiity of tlie city council, however, fixed the salary of tlw present Mayor, 1 aa 1 understand, below the salary" of the former Mayor. They in- creased the wages of a curtain few laboring men 00 per cent above what ie usually paid for the same kind of labor. If any taking lias been done where is it and for what purpose? Have the laboring men who have worked for the city during the past year and a half dene more work in a day of eight hours for their $2.00 per day, than other laboring men would have done for $t$b par day of ten hours? When men have been paid $2.00 per ' day Los not every two daj s work cost the city tho real value of three days work? Why therefore this reduction of the salary of the Mayor and this remarkable increase in the wages of those laboring men who were favored with tho citys work? A Laborer should note this fact that all the laboring men of Logan City wer not benefited by this wonderful increase of wages. He should note ahm that all the laboring men of (lie city, who are taxed, help to pay the increase of wages. Moreover, is not all the talk about $2.00 per day a mere pretense? Has it boon fully carried out? Has hot the Council finally adopted my vie .vs? Is not the contract labor oi the city now done at wages of leas than $2.00 per day? A Laborer should distinctly understand that my positiou on this salary and labor question is nut affected by any bargain or party promises. I am not under any pledge or other necessity of reducing salaries below wliat I might consider just and proper iu order to raise wages inconsistent pa funds as I do my own private funds in business uffairs. I pay those upon whom rest responsibility in the exerciso of skill, judgement and knowledge higher salaries than I pay for common labor. I do not consider this to be taking from one to give to another; bnt simply a matter of what their services are worth. I trust Mr. A Laborer' that you will see from the foregoing that I a i nt t ;n f ivor of the infamous proposition in your question. John E. Caulilse. Logan City, Oct. 9th, 1893. Elders Meeting.
