It is a glorious boon to the women of this generation that the wonderful supportive tonic, originated by Dr. Pierce, of Buffalo, N, Y., is capable of sustaining them through tbe ordeal of frequent motherhood and bringing them out of it with unimpaired womanly strength and energy. Motherhood is not only the grandest of woman's possibilities, but is the natural fulfillment of her physical being and when prepared for with proper observance of natures laws and attended by reasonable care should be free from the mental depression, excessive pain and subsequent so prostration commonly experienced. Thousands of women have found that the use of Dr. Pierces Favorite Prescription during the expectant time and over tbe nursing period imparts precisely the local strength and constitutional reinforcement needed to carry them over this critical j tincture checrfully safely, almost painlessly. It affords direct organic endurance and constitutional ncrve-forcIt gives recuperative power; 'it 'promotes the secretion of abundant healthy nourishment for the child during the nursing period. It is in the best sense the guardian cf childhood for it not only enables the mother to take up the work of life again with vigor and enjoyment but through, her it imbues the little one with the rugged natural strength which ia a constant protection against tbe physical evils with which childhood ia constantly assailed. What Dr. Pierces Favorite Prescription does for mothers and their children is well exemplified in the experience of Mrs. II. M. Hansrote, of Magnolia, MoTgan Co., W. Va. In a recent letter to Dr. Pierce she writes: I commenced to take Dr. rierccs Favorite Prescription something over two years ago, and am clad to testify that it is a to vomnii-kmtThe three children who were born fibre I began to tske your medicine (lid not live long; presence felt by their absence. Iid FISH WITH NO TAIt- (fcaeer Discovery la a Muddy Pool lu Devonshire, Enslsed. ' A few weeks ago one of the moot extraordinary fish ever known came to light In Devonshire, says the London Rambler. It was a chub, found in a muddy pool, and certainly it was as hideous a thing as one could well imagine. It was imprisoned in a sort of cage formed of the roots of an dm tree that projected under the water, and it had evidently wormed its way Into thin prison when quite small. Being unable to find its way out, it had been forced to grow in tbe shape of its cage instead of tho natural form that all chub should take. YVith no room to develop, the fish's tall had disappeared altogether, save for a little deformed stump that had wedged its way between the roots of the tree. The back fin had also vanished, for there was no room for it to grow in. The whole body of the luckless chub was distorted and had grown into the gnarled and twisted form of the root cage. The scales were incrustod- with mud and arranged in- layers, like roof slates. It is a puzzle to imagine how tire fish fed- and lived during its growing years in that watery prison, said what it did when times were hard and no food came by. It seemed contented enough and was certainly healthy and strong, in spite of its distorted shape. Calf's Liver en Civet. Among meat courses calfs liver en civet makes a nice change. Eight ounces of liver sliced half an inch thick and four of very thinly-slice- d bacon, one Spanish onion and a pinch of dried herbs will be required. Flour the slices of liver and, fry lightly on both sides; transfer to a stew pan, with the bacon, previously fried, on top; slice the onion and fry in the bacon fat; sprinkle these over the liver and bacon; add the seasoning and herbs; pour the fat from the frying pan, rinse it out with a half pint of stock, and pour this over all. Cover with a close lid and simmer slowly for of an hour. Leisure To drive this peril of the air Away from that soft neat of sleep With all her tore and longing there. But see the staunch defender rise With bristling mane and head erect. No power can snatch that precious prise, While he stands ready to protect. A soldier named B - , while among his comrades at the barracks, said things which Coporal Delhorbe deemed an lt to the French flag. The corpora! ordered the man to be punished. The colonel, when he heard of the case, was horrified and straightway reported the natter to Gen. Coronnat, commanding the Fourth- brigade of marine infantry. The general was also horrified, and addressed the following letter to the troops under his command: "Private B of the Eleventh company. Eighth regiment, has been punished for having wantonly said outrageous . things concerning the flag. It is with sadness that the general brings to the knowledge of the troops this incident, which is a veritable crime agui nst the country. As this soldier had deplorable antecedents, insults coming from him cannot soil the sacred emblem. But as he regrets his fault, we shaft confine ourselves this time lo the following reparation: The Eleventh company, which witnessed the scandal, shall be formed in the square of execution before the colonel's office, and the flag ihall be unfurled.
