Address Leads to a Discovery A Box that Carried a Load of Dead Bodies Traffic Twer A Regular Church Fight ia Tesao Body-Stealin- g with Fatal Results. Washington, Feb ia Owing to s misunderstanding of address on a large box left at the Baltimore & Ohio depot to be forwarded by express, the existence of a trade in corpse for dissecting purposes was unearthed. The box bore two addresses and the employes of the express company were unable to decide as to which address it should be sent to. After the box had been at the express office all day the employes forced its cover and one of them thrust in his hand, hoping the contents would indicate whether the box should go to Baltimore or Detroit, which were the two addresses. The employe caught hold of a human body. The box was then opened and found to contain the bodies of two women. At first it appeared that murder had been committed and that the bodies of the victims were being shipped out of town. The bodies were nude and one of them was that of an old colored woman. The other one seemed to be the corpse of a young white woman. After working all day the detective came to tbe conclusion that the bodies were shipped by It waa learned that a regular system for shipping bodies stolen from the cemeteries-arounWashington exists. The work-habeen carried on with astonishing boldness, and dosens of bodies have been-senout of town recently. Large boxes sent by the same set of men have to New Haven, and other cities. A letter from a resident of Jacksons Hole says that the Indian problem of that region willjbe settled during the present year by the rapid settlement of the region by colonists. One hundred families are coming from Arkansas and Iowa. Five representatives of the colony visited the Hole late in the fall and selected a large body of land easily irrigated upon which the colonists will settle. A number of settlers from Idaho have also arrived, and are laying off the town of Grand Teton, near the Gros Ventre river. The town la near the base of the Grand Teton peak, and will be one of the most picturesque places in the Jacksons Hole country. The supreme court haa decided that no court has the power to fix the time for the execution of a death sentence before the governor has named a day for carrying it into ef feet, or when he refuses to issue a warrant for that purpose. This finally disposes of the much-discuss- ed Edwards county case, wherein it was sought to take Arnold and Harvey, the murderers of Mayor Marsh of Kinsley, from the penitentiary and execute them without the warrant which the governor refubed to issue. The opinion of the court i positive that there is no way of carrying out a sentence of death without the warrant of the governor. e. Texas Chnreh Dnol. Sulphur Springs, Tex., Feb. 9. A run ner came to town from Clifton Prairie a neighborhood fifteen miles southwest from here, stating that a difficulty occurred there at a church today, where the people had assembled for worship. The participants were the Walker and the Williams brothers. Pistols were used jreely and with deadly results. Charley Walker was killed outright, and Wilt, hi brother, shot under the right arm. The third brother, Eaton, had his scalp grazed with two shota. It ia not known how bad the Williams boys are wounded, yet it is known that at least one of them is seriously wounded and will die during the night. Officers and physicians have gone tn the scene. Both families are prominent people and this is the deadly beginning of a feud that has raged for many monthi between them. |
