Strong, J 1 Faucett, For the past few months there has been a great deal of talk about the sale of Tiie Gazette. At one time it seemed as if such a transaction might take place, so eager and numerous were the buyers, but the whole matter finally ended just short of final sale. In consequence of the propositions made us, we pushed our accounts to an . and everywhere our collectors met with the most gratifying success, kindness and courtesy. Collections wero made from a list of 2,200 names with a loss of less than 2 per cent which we consider remarkable. For this treatment on the part of our readers the management of The Gazette is most grateful. The Gazette will continue as before to defend the rights of the people, no matter what the personal sacrifice may be. It nill continue independent in all things, hut not neutral, nor indifferent to the public welfare in any regard. From this time forward let it he understood that The Gazette is not for sale. It has before it a vast work to perform a mission to fill which has only just begun. abrupt-settlemen- STANDING COMMITTEES. MARCH 3, 1X90. Wis., a few days ago, Mills, in speaking of compulsory education and the Bennett law, said the Democratic party took its staud for the inalienable right of family government and against the right of a state to interfere with the manner of a childs education. The result of the enforcement of that policy in the South is a generation of numbskulls who are not adequately prepared to act their part in the conduct of the government a breed of Democrats whose chief aim in life is tha politi cal disfranchisement of the negro. j DISTRICT IDURT OF THE HH8T liisii-!il id In i lie-- inulfer apiln-uliia.o- f Iwue l oi'ilonNkf. lor a change id nuineol hi- - adepleo . duugliter. l.ydia J. It is cusp iinary for the Prince to bold levees in behalf of her Majesty, and admission to one f these receptions is, according to court etiquette, equivalent in all respects to presentation to the Queen. It apjiears. that ut a leveebeld the past season an American ladv was admitted who is not exactly in good standing in royal opinion, the Queen being apt to draw the lines somewhat rigidly. Her Mijesty heard of the fact recently, probably through one of her cliamlier women, who by the way, are all of them scions of nobility, and she was ery angry. She called the Prince to task, and aristocratic gossip bus it that words were not spared in ciastisiug liis royal highness, that the latter took it all very coolly uiul respectfuly, and that after leaving the maternal presence he deliberately wrote a note to the ladys husband inviting them both to spend an evening with him. This was also carried to the Queen, and now Albert Edward and his mother are said to lie oil very ceremonial terms. The attention of the Prince to the lady in question ami the coinpluisaucy of the husband are the talk of the people posted on such subjects, und are viewed with regret by those who hoped that the future King of England had settled down to be an example of domestic propriety. fashion, how much hap would doj.
