The Gazette gives considerable space this week to tallies giving the oilieiul count by counties, of the vote at the late election in Utah. As the time is not far distant when a Delegate to Congress will have to be elected to succeed the lion. John T. Caine and ns the Liberals claim they may he able to elect their nominee for that position, these figures showing the vote at the last election throughout the Territory are of considerable significance as indicating the considerable majorities which the Liberals must overcome in order to eleet their choice as delegate. We believe that the People's party will renominate Hon. John T. Caine, as there is no valid reason why his party should not be satisfied with that distinguished gentlemans past services. As to whom the Liberals will nominate it is of course impossible to conWe do not believe, as jecture. many do, that Judge O. W. Powers will be their choice or that he will accept the nomination unless he at least figures that there is a very fair chance of winning. Wc conjecture, therefore, that the nomination of Mr. Powers will mean a hotly contested and bitter campaign. The conditions of partizan poli tics in Utah arc rapidly undergoing important changes. The old lines of partizan bitterness and hatred are rapidly breaking up. The late election demonstrated by the results in Salt Lake, Weber and Juab counties at least that Liberals will not object to voting for Mormons when from any cause they choose do so. Personal and business 3bWiilAns divide" them and In Utah probably always will. illustrated. well is this County Many leading Liberals here are only desirous of getting money and position for themselves and they accept such opportunities from the Peoples party quite as thankfully as they would from their own Naturally, too, the People's party has preferences among Liberals as was illustrated when Prof. Merrill was chosen to a jmsition on the Utah County hoard of school examiners in preferanee to J. W. N. Whitccotton, by a Peoples County Court. Position hunters are likely to demoralize the Liberal party for vears. upward. The total number of passengers in carried 1880 was dOOj 124,707. This is equivalent to one half of the entire population of the earth. If one passenger had done all the railroad traveling that was done on the roads of the United States last year he would have gone 11,905,720,015 miles .equivalent to going around the earth 478, 020, timers, or making 03 round trips to the sun. As a matter of fact, however, the statistics show the average distance each passenThe ger traveled was 24,17 miles. we include the assume, figures, elevated railroad travel in the city, as we do, of course, suburban travel. These multitudinous short trips increase from year to year, tending constantly to reduce the length of the average journey of 1889 was the shortest ever recorded. The of number average passengers car ried per mile of railroad was 3,242, 0, which was an increase over any former year. While travel has constantly increased from year to year, the rate of fare shows a decrease, imperceptible in practice. InlS82the average rate per mile was 2.514, while in 1880 it was 2 170. Again, it is no doubt true that five cents travel in cities and some appreciable refactions in suburban traffic are the causes of bringing the average rate per mile below tliiee cents. The prevailing rate over the Eastern rail roads is three cents a mile, but in the West the rates over three sents far cxcede those below the figure. In view of the vast Bum of money that is paid to the railroads for passenger transportions, it may occur to the political economists of the no distant future to inquire whether people do not travel too much for their own good FOR TIIE MONEY IN IT. for the sin and sorrow that blights God gift oi life aiul love; each an area f l.l.iiS- - ''s hnal iimmiit of his ;ni rsialr in lies 15 r sjit-i-ia- j "1,1,R fcni,I all I lit drills ,f r;i i tu Lite have aid I".1''''11 bvidrd aiinni tin- ' ni on the pla ( iwisted mihe!
