That respect for the rights of the people recognized In giving very man a fair trial; in making this a government of, for, and by the people; in mingling mercy with justice in the treatment of offenders; in defending every man in the right to life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness etc., etc., such ideas are a part of our Christian heritage. (5) All our schools and institutions of learning recognize the Christian religion if any. The great universities and colleges of the land, with hardly an exception, are decidedly Christian. The public schools, while not favoring sectarianism, recognize the fundamental truths of the Christian religion where any recognition to religion is given. ; mighty volume of Christian sentiment o every man the right to worshipt God according to the dictates of his own conscience. TJie Chinaman can build his temple and worship his idols and no one interferes. We have in This country no established religion, but on the contrary the most beautiful exemplification of the complete sapar-atio- n of the church and Btate that the worlds affords. It Is the admiration of all men. Every man decides with the utmost freedom as to what or how or when he shall worship, or whether he shall worship at all or not. The state neither forces upon us, nor taxes us for the suffort of the any religion. The state is supreme in matters civil and and has nothing to do with matters religious: the church is supreme in matters religious and has nothing to do with matters civil. So that this Is a Christian nation because the people in their private beliefs are Christian, and not because we have here any established religion. Now the Sabbath is undoubtedly a Christian institution, and religious people generally spend it in a religious manner, bub it is a day that has a twofold character, the one economic, the other religions. The Economic character of the day has to do with it as a day of rest only, and It is this aspect of the day with which state deals. It is found that one days rest in seven is a most wise practice. No other division of time suits so well as this. Manufacturers, tradesmen, and laborers in general declare that the day is not lost, but that the recuperation of powers, and the buoyancy of spirit that come with the days rest from toil make up for lost time. Horses as well as men will do more and better work with this rest than without it. The enlightened sentiment of the age denounces a life of uninterrupted toil for man and beast, such a life is a burden, a drudgery. Here must be a time for rest, for the restoration of the powers of mind and body. A time when man can turn his attention to higher and nobler thaughts. So that jurists, statesmen, and people generally look upon the Sabbath as a day of rest as a most wise civil institution. Chief Justice Fild, of the United States Supreme Court, has well and forcibly said: ' Laws setting aside Sunday as .a day of rest are upheld, not from any right of the government to legislate for the promotion of religious observances, but from it right, to protect all persons from the physical and moral debasement which comes from uninterrupted labor. Such laws have always been deemed beneficent and merciful laws, especially to the and defendant, to the laborers in our factories and workshops, and in the heated rooms of our cities; and their validity has been sustained by the highest courts of the States. Blackstone says: The keeping of one day in seven holy, as a time of relaxation and refreshment as well as Is at InMtimeblo bene- SublicaWOrshiD. state considered merely as a civil institution. Lord Macauley says in his spech on the Ten Hours Bill: Therefore it Is that we are not poorer but richer because we have through many ages rested from our labor one day in seven. That day is not lost. While industry is suspended, while the plough lies in the furrow, while the exchange is silent, while no smoke ascends from the factory, as a process is going on quite as important to the wealth of nations as any process which is performed on more busy days. Man, the machine of machines, the machine compared with which all the contrivances of the WattB and Arkwrights are worthless, is repairing and winding up, so that he returns to his labors on the Monday with clearer intellect, with livelier spirits, and with renewed corporal vigor. It is this character of the day that the signers of this Sunday Law Petition ask the general Government to recognize in those departments In which it is supreme. They simply ask that in the army and navy, in the mail and interstate commerce departments, and in the territories, the civil character of Sunday as a rest day be guarded by laws protecting man and beast from uninterrupted labor, and grant-iu-g them one days rest in seven.
