Those only who havo visited the islands of the South Seas fully can understand the nature or characteristics of the natives who dwell upon them. And no description of mine can bring to tho mind of the reader a realistic picture of the scene which presented to our view the first human being which our party beheld upon the Isle Euliila. Among the races of people that inhabit the earths theSouth Sea Islanders are in many respects peculiar both in personal appearance and in character. The woman we saw, for an instant, was a fair type of female Polynesian perfection. Her forehead was rather low and broad, her eyes large and jet black, her form plump and lier movements slow and graceful. Of course there are among the Polynasians differen classes of people, high and low, smal and great according to the standards of life prevailing among them. The higher classes among all nationalities have as a rule some clearly defined characteristic of superiority. Those accustomed to rule, for instance, no matter what race they belong to, have certain common imperative ways, certain marks of personal bearing which are very much alike and very easily distinguished by a man of experience. On the other hand a serf and a slave is the same the world over, whether he is the bondman of an idea or by law a mere cliattle. From my general knowledge of men and humanity I at once proclaimed to my companions the high rank of the woman we had discovered. Indeed her gorgeous though peculiar dress was a wonder of beauty and richness in its way and of itself indicated somewhat of her station. Without much delay we approached the portals of the womans abode. In a respectful manner we knocked for admittance. For some time there was no response to our call but after a while the woman we had seen came forward slowly and doubtfully as if not able to determine whetber to be pleased or afraid. She neither bowei nor spoke in answer to our salutations but her great black eyes glowed with intense excitement and surprise and she gazed at her visitors as if to satisfy herself of some doubtful In vain we sought to point. introduce ourselves or asked questions for she did not seem to understand one word 'of aU that was said. Then we made motieus and by signs and signals apparently succeeded in conveying to her mine the idea that we came from over the sea. By degrees she became quite as anxious as we were to exchange ideas and indulged in all sorts of gestures. In the midst of this pantomime a voice was heard calling from some distant part of the house, (Laluila! Laluila! to which the woman before us responded with a series of musical vowel sounds. So we stood before Laluila, the whilom favorite of Boluber a! It would be but a tedious story to relate how during a stay of many months on the island we at lengtli acquired some knowledge of the language of the solitary inhabitant and her attendant and how from day to day we discovered new ruins or new scenic wonders and marveled at the - ; remarkable temperature and delight- ful climate that prevailed so continuously. But far more marvelous than all our other discoveries was the fact that by night during certain periods of each month a multitude of spirit forms appeared to people the island by night. Their forms features and actions 1 EMIGRATION CANYON. could be clearly distinguished beyond any doubt of delusion by the open ..i eye.
