The New Established Western consumers is already considerable throughout the region north and west of Illinois. Lake and canal rates have also been reduced, and are near their minimum. Better prices for iron are reported at Pittsburg, at Philadelphia, and to some extent here, the advance on many kinds of pig Iron being about 50 eta. per tou. But Northern No 1 can still he bought here at 616.50 to 618.00; and Southern No 1 at 616.25 to 617.00 per ton. The markets for manufactured products arc stronger and higher, but there is a feeling of doubt whether the improvement will hold after the orders have been placed which result from recent destruction of property by floods. In coal, recent hopes have not been realized. It is even stated that the Beading Company has not received a single order at the late advance, and sales below the schedule are reported at Philadelia unchanged, but tin phia. Copper u lower at 20 cents, production having been stimulated. Wool is rather stronger, 184 quotations averaging 3 of a cent higher, aud manufacturers in some lines Duy more hopefully, but in many others the state ot the goods market is still given as a good reason for buying ho more than enough for immediate requirements. Wheat has been advanced It cents, with sales of 60 million bushels here for the week. But this speculative movement seems to take no account of the fact that wheat and flour equivalent to about 40 million bushels in excess of a minimum stock will probably remain from the last crop July 1st, to be added to a new supply, which now promises to exceed all requirements for the next year. Corn is half a cent and oats three-quartehigher, for no other reason than because wheat advances. Cotton has declined an eighth, with sales of 486,000 bales in a week, which is more than double tbe entire stock at all ports. A long expected break iu coffee lowers the price li cents with issales of15696,000 cents still bags. But tbe price for December options, against 91 a year ago, and operators wonder why the public does not buy. Pork, lard and hogs are a fraction lower, sugar unchanged for this week, aud leather half a cent higher for some grades. The general tendency of prices has been slightly upward, nut the advance averages only an eighth of 1 per cent for the week. The heavy shipments of gold this week are a surprise to many, and are attributed by some bankers to the needs of the Bank of France and the large expenditures of Americans at the Exposition. But the balance of foreign trade has for months been so heavily against this country that no explanation of gold shipments meris necessary. For June, thus far, chandise exports from New York are 16 per cent, larger than last years, with imports somewhat smaller, but even these changes would leave a heavy excess of imports over ex rts to be met by shipments of secures of gold. At present, the temper of speculation doss not encourage the belief that foreign buyers will take railway securities largely. On the tion of rail rates 7 stock market Is a lower' than a week ago, but with great speculative strength still shown in the stocks which have been controlled by powerful combinations. Tbe ' business failures occurring country during the throughout the as last seven days, reported to R. G. Dnn & Go., the Mercentile Agency, number, for the Uulted States, 195, and for Canada, 25, ora total of 220, as compared with 250 last week, and 225 the week previous to the last. For the corresponding week of last year the figures were 2o4, representing 176 failures In United States, and 28 In the Domonion of Canada. New York June 29, 1889. . i l(ei)r j) percent. The actual increase of 4 per cent, in volume of payments is fairly distributed. though st about a third of the cities business falls below last years. At Milwaukee, continued wet weather retards, and business is rather quiet at Kansas City, and outside of speculative operations and the iron trade, it is generally dull at Phlladelpnia, but marked improvement is noted at Pittsburg, and in a leas degree at Cleveland. The demand for money is very active there, but generally very moderate, with collections not on the whole perceptibly better. Bains have decidedly improved crop prospects ia the Northwest, so that groat hopeful ness tinges commercial reports from that section, and the demoralisation of rail rates is commonly supposed to promise better returns to farmers, while the difference in cost of transporting Eastern products to V5TCXB?l2LS3. i old-tim- While business is rather more active, it cannot be said that the outlook has on the t whole impnred.o A HANDSOME RESIDENCE. is a better feeling, with lrgerd There , a Specialty. iQ Repairing in iron and wool, and transactions lmm mnU Stomiu Flttiafr nm aad View mi a Dwdltae All kinds or IlumMuff. are more favorable. crop " , t prospects i Atfemod lo Oat of lha Ordinary.
