AM dying, Egypt, dying! Ebbs the rrtmeon life tide fast. And the dark Plutonian shadow Gather on the evening blast. Let thine arm, oh. Queen! support ne; Hush thy sobs and bow thine ear. Hearken to the great heart secrets. Thou, and thou alone, must hear. Though my scarred and veteran gions Dear their eagles high no more, And my wrecked and shattered galleys Strew dark Actlum's fatal shore; Though no glittering guards surround le- me, Prompt to do their master's will, I must perish like a Roman Die the great Triumvir still. Let not Caesar's servile minions Mock the Hon thus laid low; 'Twits no foe man's hand that slew him, Twaa hla own that struck the blow. Hear, then, pillowed on thy bosom, Ere his star fades quite away. Him vho, drunk with thy caresses. Madly flung a world awayl Should the base plebeian rabble Dare assail my fame at Rome, Where my noble spouse, Octavio, Weepa within her widowed home. Seek her say the gods have told me Altars, augurs, circling wings That her blood, with mine commingled. Yet shall mount the throne of klnga d And for thee, Egyptian! Glorious sorceress of the Nile, to Light the path Stygian horrors. With the splendors of thy smile. Give the Caesar crowns and arches. Let his brow the laurel twine; X can scorn the Senate's trlumps. Triumphing in love like thine. star-eye- I am dying, Egypt, dying; Harkl Insulting foeman's cry; They are coming quick, my falchion! Let me front them ere I die. Ah I no more amid the battle Shall my heart exulting swell, Isis and Osiris guard thee, Cleopatra! Rome! farewell! General W. II. Lytle, the author of this poem, was born In Cincinnati, In 1SZS. He served with distinction In the Mexlran army; and on the outbreak of the Civil War became an officer of the Federal forces. He was killed at Chlckamauga In 1863. lie wrote, this after witnessing poem one night Dooth's performance of Antony. The Old or the New, From the American Tribune: The most marked development of "sectionalism" that has recently occurred was heard In Atlanta, Ga., a few nlghta ago, when the president of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, addressing a large meeting of the association. said: "It might be well for ua now to aay there la no east, no west, no north, vo south; but there was a south, and It Is for this south and her cause that our fathera fought, and It la for this south that we are here tonight, and It Is to this south that we, too, will pledge our devotion and give our unswerving loyalty. This la the boldest declaration made for some time. If It means anything, It la that the sons of the Confederate veterans are ready to follow In the footsteps of their fathers In bearing arms against the nation In support of the cause for which their fathers fought The report of this meeting is given another column, copies from the Atlanta Constitution. The Constitution says: "It was distinctly a southern throng, and the sentiment was strictly of the south. But, we would regret to believe that it was representative of the south. If so, all the talk of a "new south Is s delusion, and the struggle for the supremacy of a section over the whole Is not yet ended. Such sentiments are reactionary and dangerous, and augur It may badly for the future. be that these young men have given expressions to the real sentiments of the south; but we prefer to regard It as being merely the too enthusiastic utterance inspired by filial affection, which they, themselves, will not apIn prove in their calmer moments. no other country under the sun could ircq, who have been In rebellion against their government hold reunions as the Confederates are permitted to do, and nowhere else could these same Sons of Confederate Veteram have met and arranged to attend such a reunion at the one proposed to be held at Nashville. It would be better for all concerned If they would show a proper appreciation of such unprecedented liberty, by pledging themselves to the support of the government that has proven Itself so generous and beneflcient to them and theirs, Instead of Indulging In wild and sectional vaporing that serve only to In duge the hope that Us greater, better spirit will rise above It all, and assert itself until ell disloyal sentiments are put under Its feet, and that It will teach a higher and nobler sentiment than devotion to a section, until they.) F rapped with us, shall be pledged to one country, one government, one flag. It la only by this means that the future can ha made peaceful and secure, and America become truly great. Indeed, it la already doing this, and everywhere throughout that region we aee a new order of thlnga beginning to prevail. The old feeling of exclusiveness and ostracism Is disappearing, until men from the north are made welcome to dwell on Its plains end in the valleys of its mountains. It follows that education Is spreading its benign Influence there; railroads are being built and extended to every town; factories are multiplying and natural resources are being utilised, cities are taking the place of hamlets; there ia diversified farming Instead of the old custom of raising but one product, end everywhere e new south la superseding the old south to which these young men so thoughtlessly pledge themselves. Let them remember their fathers with gratitude, take pride In their valor, and do all honor to their memory ;but this does not require a pledge of loyalty to the old south or its "cause. Their fathers. If living, would not spprove cf this utterance, but would rather turn their faces toward the better day, and maich with us to the achievements of an undivided people and an Indivisible Union. United, we may defy and outstrip the world; divided, it becomes only a question of time when we will be too weak to protect ourselves from thosa of other lends who would profit by our loss, and free government be pronounced a failure among men. But, to promote unity and acquire strength, It Is necessary that we avow and cultivate a national apirit In all sections, so that no newspaper reporter, anywhere, will hare occasion to describe our private or public gatherings as, a distinctly southern throng, or exnorthern, and the sentiment pressed as strictly of the south, or of the north. To the republic, the one means life; the other, death. Fansloa Department. Complaint has been filed at the pension bureau against the Soldiers' Home at Roseburg, Oregon, alleging that It la violating section 4,745 of the revised statutes, making it a misdemeanor for any one pledging or receiving as a pledge the mortgage, sale, assignment or transfer of any right, claim, or interest In any pension certificate, or to hold It as security for any debt or promise. Some Inmates of the home called attention to the matter, and It was taken up by several Grand Army posts, one of which, at Roaeburg, has made a formal complaint The bureau has made an Investigation, and exonerated the management of the home. There are legal authorities both ways, and a decision construing strictly the statute cited would, It la stated, be not only unjust, but lead to serious consequences. The evidence shows that the home directors have required all pensioners to surrender their pensions to the treasurer of the home. Four dollars a month is then allowed each pensioner for personal expenses, and the remainder paid to dependent relatives, or, if there be none, the money is accumulated for the benefit of the The practice la substantially similar to that In operation at twenty-on- e other soldiers' homes. The pension bureau takes the position that It is not expedient to Intervene In the cane, as the act of March 3, 1893, by Implication, sanctions the requirement, which hu been in force in most' of the state soldiers' homes. Commissioner Evans says that he believes the president will act favorably on his recommendation for a modification of the Cleveland order Including pension boards In the civil service where fees amount to more than 300 per annum. The president has under contemplation several changes and modifications In the orders formulated by his predecessors, and may embody everything in an omnibus order. How soon executive action will be taken is purely a matte? of speculation. Considerable confusion has arisen from premature publication of several changes In prospect, notably that with regard to pension boards. They will be made, however, In good time. pen-alon- er. of Ceylon's Kemarkablo Illrda Among the numerous bird In Ceyt Ion there are few more remarkable than the Virginian horned owl. He has loot Ills tail feathers, and, owing to hla heavy bljl larger than the proverbial plumber's bill he has a hard time maintaining a dignified position. He wts perched comfortably on the topmost perch of his cage yesterday afternoon when he chanced to spy an appetizing bit of broad at the bottom. Starting to hop gracefully down he was prevented by the weight of his bill, which toppled him off his balance and made him, spin around the perch like an animated plnwheel. Four or live times the poor bird went through the same antics, and It was only by a sudden and' painful flop that he reached the coveted morsel. JIST AS GUARANTEED. Macon, Ga., March 6, 1897.
