Show 1881. TUESDAY, SALTUKE MORMON EVENING CHRONICLE UW AMD MORMON DIM. PKL. The editor of the Utah Journal, a a representative of the moaoganic majority of the Brigham aainti, comes beck in n mild wnj, upon the. ferodoui man-eatend polygamic editor (Conspiracy Jfick) of the Decent Nm, in the contro-- ? in veiay which bee need between them, connection with the serving of legal end warrant!, under process, aubpa-neeThe statutes. Utah truly rural editor of iba Journal ia unquestionably right in hie poailiun on the subject, end alter being inaulted by en elder end n writer who ia hia inferior in every reaped, it ahowa either greet forbee re nee on hia pert, or elra e greet fear of church to withhold the jeurneliatic leah from the deeerring beck of the preten-tio- ua Metropolitan leribe end brother in the Anionic priaathoad. And yet auch ia the denae ignorance of the readen of iheae church pepera, it into be preaumed that the aenaeleaa eaaertiona of the Kin its of in the opinion will, the outweigh readers, bigoted truthful legal atatamenta of the Journal. And here, by the way, wo muat im preaa upon our pricetly brethren (whet there ia left of them), the nocooaity of complying with our former reqneet now under the premure of crania taking the form of a demand that the prieethood lay handa on the editor of the Journal and awing him from the aanctum of the weekly into Die place of the Ai our cowardly runaway, Plauroee. auggaation in the Eeening Hail, coma eight or nine yeara ago, the laat named iadiridual waa tranaplanted irom the lirely Ogden Junction and ordered to take the place of two auperannualed wooden-hea- d "editors of labeled the Decent Next. Before Penrose took to hia heels, and when we aaw that he wu rerging into aecond childhood, we mildly iuaiated that the Logan editor wu the Gumming man. Under ite preoent editorial infliction, the Xcut haa become atale, flat and unprofitable, and the quicker freah blood from the country ia injected into ila veina the better for all concerned. reg John Taylor from hia cent two not amerta orer that per treat, of the Sainta hare actually obeyed the dirine command to pluralify and multiply. He aaya in ao many word in hia recent epiatle from nowhere to the conference: "He (the Mormon god) hu moreover told ua that if we do not obey thou principlea we ahall be damned." It ia quite time that the 98 per cent thua devoted to deelruction beetir tliemaelvee to obtain aome of the fat offices, hitherto monopolized by the two per cent plurala. By the way, ian't it a telling commentary on the bogua priaathood and the bogua church generally that, according to John Taylor, per cent of the entire memberahip trample under foot the fundamental principle of their religion, and yet allow the miaerable minority to hold the otficu and lead them, the great majority, about a dancing bear ia led by the notte, juat about on exhibition! And, if proud of hia collar and chain, that garruloua apoatle on wheels, Heber J, Grant, movea that in view of the fact that he and hia apiritleaa crowd are having great injuatice done them by the inaignificant few which rule over them, that a committee of 21 out of the 98 per cent of dupes, in which number the mover include! himaelf, be appointed to write themselves down asses, in a proteat to the president and to the nation againal the injustice inflicted upon them by the booted and apurred polygamists. a the people and on tho defensive against a hostile and disloyal organization, asks of the government that the political control of the Territory be shilled from the hands of the enemies of the Republic to those of its friends, and that under tbs control of the last, an era of good government and of conciliatory action toward those who are inclined lobe good citizens shall be inaugurated. The Democrat would have it, that the Liberal parly inappling to the rightful authority of the general government for Ijie purpose of correcting tho abuses which have grown up under the spwy of the priesthood, are guilty of political heresy. The absurdity of the charge is only equalled by the cheek of the impracticable! who make it. this cen-ur- e, u neat-hidin- one-ho- u u u THE IXrBACTICAHLK. mtaa or it ah. Nature haa deposited a supply of mineral wealth in tho shape of crude material in vast and varied proportions in the valleys, foothills and mountains of Utah. The great inland sea at our doors, while furnishing the finest of bathing facilities, continually leaves up on its shores vast deposits of salt, on which our quarts mills through all this region depend for their necessary supplies. The foothills upon which our large towns are built up on either side of mountain streams, are rich in quarries of beautiful and various buildinter-mounta- of kaorock, in deposits ing fire common and lin, gypsum, sand and feldspar, silica, days, comprising the finest of material for the manufacture of porcelain-warglass, paints and pigments, fire and common brick. Higher up in the mountains wo strike the silver, lead and milling ore mines from which during the last fifteen years of the infancy of our mining interest, eighty millions of dollars worth of geld, silver and lead have been extracted. Our mining districts are but partially explored hardly scratched as yet. They are easy of access and for the most part all near to fertile valleys and cultiLabor and supplies are vated farms. Out-dowork in cheap and plentiful. our beautiful climate can be carried on throughout the year, with much less loss of time on account of inclement weather than in the larger part of the settled portions of this continent. Improvement in processes for cheaply handling the large bodies of ores found in our mining districts are adding to the facilities furnished to capital and labor. Large areas of coal with inexhaustible deposits of iron ore in close promimity, point to ultimate development on a large scale, and promise to make Utah, under more favorable circumstances, the Pennregion sylvania of this in the near future. Mineral, agricultural and grazing facilities and resources are the three great lines of productive industry upon which Utah must advance in the direction of material wealth. The question arises why, with these elements of wealth within her burden, Utah is behind the great commonwealths that started in the race as Territories about the lime she did? Minnesota Colorado, Nebraska and Kansu have outstripped this favored Territory ten to one in every development which adds strength and value to organized political communities It is evident to the most superficial observer that the dominant, political, social and religious influences at work in this Territory from the outset, and which still govern, interfere with and prevent the influx of capital and population at present, in the past, impede and cripple the growth uf this favored Territory. A union of church and state is inimical to the spiritual life of the first and a clog on the material progress of the second. Only mischief and final disaster can come of persistent devotion to this union. In religious and social relations the polygamous majority in Utah a re separated from the minority by a present impassable gulf. Recent developments point to a determination on the part of the ruling priesthood to rule or ruin. The untruthful, disgraceful epistle of the hidden head of the ruling church, read in the hearing of the Logan conference and published to the world is filled with defiance to the laws and authority of the nation. An attempt is to Ijs mails to obtain ad endorsement of this screed by the business men of the Mormon ('hurrli. We shall see whether they propose to stand by these violators of law and atlbeir bidding involve this Territory still further in the cursed malaria of polygamy. One thing is certain, the lime has fully roiue to remove from this Territory anil ila business interests, the incubus of priestly domination which has so. long and sari ously interfered with our prosiects The government has commenced the work, let it lie ent short in righteousness, and let Utah lie redeemed, disenthralled and purified, that aha may stand forth in the pride and licaii(y of a loyal American State. e, or n u The tranacendental editor of the Ikm oerat reminda one of the Iriah aoldierin the revoluntionary army who alone brought In three lleaaian grenodicra prisoner. In making a circuitous attack on the Liberal iarty and a legislative commia-aionthe editor throws out hia pliiloso-phictentacles in this dainty fashion: "Various forms of government are but various expressions of different ideas, and natiou! like men, have tlieir ideal atandanls, and the nearest approach a realisation of their ideas is but an approximation."
