During the year the national debt was reduced $G73, 000,000 and is now less than $17,000,000,000. The policy of retrenchment in fed- eral expenditures, established a few years ago, has resulted in the conversion of savings into tax reduction for the people. Within eight years nearly t.we million people have been relieved entirely of federal taxation. President Hoover has announced that a careful study is being made to determine the possibilities for reducing federal taxes in the future. This will probably be done, but it will be of little direct benefit to the public if the orgy of spending by local units of government, that has multiplied their cost time and again in recent years, is continued. This boat was later dismantled and shipped to Salt Lake, where it was reconditioned and navigated on Salt lake until it was destroyed by storm. Along in 1910 to 1913 Thomas Wim mer and Captain Yokey operated boats on Green river south of S)wer About the same time and later, Captain Blake, now the editor of the San Juan News, at Monticello, Utah, operated a power boat and made many trips from Grecnriver to Moab and return. In 1911 E. T. Merritt took a large party of Salt Lake business men by motor boat and barge from Creenriver to Moab. During 1912 a party of Creenriver men, working Elacer claims on the Colorado river Hyte and Ferry, transported their machinery by boat from llyte to the scene of their mining operations. More raently, and at this time, all the machinery and equipment used by the oil companies operating on the Grand river below Moab has been shipped from Moab by boat. You reaffirmed the position of this nation to the estimation of mankind. You saved civilization from a gigantic reverse. Nobody says now that Americans cannot fight. Our people were influenced by many motives to undertake to carry on this gigantic conflict, but we went in and came out singularly free from these questionable causes and results which have often characterized other wars. You all know what a character witness' is: One who is called to testify to the reputation of another in the community in which he lives. Much testimony has been given concerning the American Legion. In the main, this has been favorable, proper occasions of criticism have been rare.
